Your lost contacts don't have to do with root. There are lots of folks here to help you with this, so no need to take it to VZW, and no they won't know it was rooted if you unroot.
Here's a thread with some helpful info: Let us know if this doesn't solve your issues...

Did you freeze anything with ti backup. I once froze backup assistant, and had lost contact issues...
Swyped while swerving

Yes I Did Freeze Backup Assistant Version 1.0 & Backup Assistant Version 2.2.1 in Titanium Pro. Could that have been the Cause of my LOST CONTACTS. I have since DEFROSTED them and I have also Backed Up all of my CONTACTS via the .CSV Files on my G mail Account. I use Outlook Express for my email Application and converted the Windows Address Book (.WAB) to a (.CSV) and Synced them.
THANKS AGAIN to this FORUM to "COME TO MY RESCUE".

also you con go into contacts, than hard menu key, than more, than import/export, and export them to your sd card, that way they will always be on the sd card with you

I have a question..
I recently just rooted (z4)/change rom to Liberty 1.5 and did a titanium backup which is just awesome. My problem is when i go to my contacts it says no contacts on phone but when i go to type a new text message and i start typing a name it still has my contacts. I dont understand why it still has the contacts when i'm receiving calls or writing text messages but it does not see them when i select the contacts icon. Any ideas?
Nevermind, got them.....If i sync my contacts up with my gmail then it recovered them.

I've never had issue with lost contacts even on my old dumb phones since they were smart enough to understand SyncML which I've yet to find an app for on Android. But I've not looked all that hard either since I have various other solutions such as gmail and exchange to use instead.
Though for my wife when I moved her to my old OG Droid I had to use the backup assistant and then exported to CSV and imported to GMail. Not a bad idea to occasionally export your contact list to CSV and save somewhere just in case Google has a system crash and loses your list or something. Highly unlikely, but better safe than sorry.
