DISCLAIMER! This story is 100% true, The names were changed to protect the innocent.
My story begins in June 2010 when I placed my very first Pre-Order for android smart phone....The DROID X! As a long time smart phone user (Palm 680->Palm700w->XV6700->xV6800), I was very excited to finally buy into an operating platform that would provide legacy supported on future phone. On July 2, 2010, I was lucky enough to get a 1 of the only 5 phones that came into Bust Buy (remember how hard it was to find a DX at launch) and was immediately in love! Despite eclair with no a2dp support, strangely bad 2.1 camera, and the laggy 2.1 os this phone just felt RIGHT in my pocket. I should note that I have NEVER used a case on my DX and it still looks mint'ish
Over the past 2 years, I spent 100's of hours flashing, restoring, prop modding, and learning about my DX. Waking up daily and checking on when offical Froyo would be release then ICS and occasionally googling "Droid X Bootloader" hoping for a breakthrough..... It truly became a labor of love..........
Then I got the email....May 20, 2012..."You are eligible for free Verizon phone update". On that same I started hearing about Verizon's upcoming "elimination of grandfathered unlimited data. Add in my obsession for all things with buttons and you have the perfect storm.. off to the verizon store I go!
Despite Moto's bootloader blocking, the feel/poor battery life of the Nexus steered me toward the Razr Maxx. Dual core, 4g, and battery life really won me over; not to mention the future possiblity of compatibility with "ubuntu for Android".
The first 4 days of owning a Maxx were amazing! I only charged the phone 2 times in the first 4 days of ownership under heavy 4 g use. I even through on a miui 4.0.1 custom rom. It felt like my Dx all over again..... Then it happened!!!!~! I don't know how, I don't know when, and I don't know why..... my gorillia glass was shattered! I mean completely shattered along the entire parameter of the edges with several large cracks extending along the base of the phone (propagating form the microphone hole outward). The LCD was in working order, just the glass was broken...I think it happened during charging (THIS PHONE GETS HOTTTT).
At this point i feel it's important to mention that I've never purchased any insurance with any of my smartphones. NEVER including my Maxx!
In a panic I fired up my ODIN, reset everything to stock and rushed to verizon store to plead my case.
I entered the Verizon store, gave my name to the girl up front and waiting to be called. After a 20 minute wait, I approached the front desk FILLED with unfocused rage. I told my story to the verizon rep Kevin. I stating that I had only had the phone less then a week and I never dropped the phone. Kevin looked over my phone, walked back to show the manager then returned within 30 seconds and said "Sorry about your phone. Since you didn't purchase insurance there it's gonna cost you the full value of the phone for a replacement.....$649.99". Poor Kevin. The string of obscenities that seemed to flow from my mouth was unlike anything I had ever said before! It was only a matter of time until the store manager "Tom" came over to bail Kevin out with a "Sir is everything alright!"? I explained my situation to Tom. He and I called Motorola who asked that we send the phone back for evaluation, with I immediately did.
About 5 days later I had a package from Moto Texas.....Inside was my broken phone with a long note about how this phone was damaged due to "user abuse" and a quote for $229 for a replacement screenOff to the Verizon Store again (once such a happy place for me)..
As I entered the verizon store I noticed Tom was working again. I immediately rushed pasted the "nametaking girl" at the front of the store and showed Tom my broken phone. Again Tom and I called Motorola. And again Moto asked that I send in my phone for evaluation.... I refused. After another string of obscenities, Tom eventually offer to assist me in commuting insurance fraud by proactively adding insurance to my phone then submitting my phone for claim and only a 100$ deductible. Of course I refused. Frustrated, Tom said "Fine, pay $649 for a new phone or we are done here". WELL I LOST IT~!~! I began yelling as loud as I could "Verizon doesn't care about their customers". "LEAVE OR I AM CALLING THE POLICE" Tom Yelled . "GO AHEAD AND CALL THE POLICE I RESPONDED, I CAN'T WAIT TO TELL THE COPS AND VERIZON CORPORATE ABOUT HOW YOU OFFERED TO HELP ME COMMIT INSURANCE FRAUD" I responded.I must have said the magic words. As soon as I mentioned "Insurance Fraud" Tom came through with 1 final offer..... "Immediately leave the store and never come back and someone will bring you a replace phone FREE of charge as a 1 time courtesy". FINALLY and offer too good to refuse!
I left the Verizon store, got in my car and waited. About 5 minutes later Tom walked out with a "Refurbished " good as new RAZR MAXX! I could see customers and store employees peering through the storefront window at Tom and I's parking-lot transaction....I must have made quite a scene inside the store. I grabbed the phone and GOT GOING! I was afraid someone called the cops :P
Too afraid to use my new Maxx, I decided it would be a good phone upgrade for my wife (previously on fascinate). almost a month in, my wife loves her new Maxx. As for me, I miss 4g but still love my DX. It just feels right.
