Would You Consider Helping The Android Community, Community Service?

Hey guys, so the vice president of my school asked me to fill out this online leadership survey and a few of the questions are regarding community service. I know I don't work at a soup kitchen, but do you think I can say that I do community service because I service the android community... or am I stretching the definition?

How does one define community service?

I suppose this is more of a hobby..

I guess you can ask him to give you the definition himself since it will change from person to person and that way you should be in track. Also, most people from my own experience consider "community service " to be provided in some way of physical form. For example handing out food, picking garbage in a park,...get the point. On the other hand I know that you spent endless hours providing for the android community but in my opinion that's some kind of cyberspace time if you will. Best bet ask your professor to defined for you. Good luck I remember those old days in college ...lol

Somehow I don't think this is what the VP had in mind. He likely meant you're local community.

    Here's a few ideas:

    Cleaning a park.
Collecting items for charity such as clothes, food, or furniture.
Getting involved with Habitat for Humanity
Helping the elderly in nursing homes.
Helping the local fire or police service.
Helping out at a local library.
    Tutoring children with learning disabilities.

Hopefully this won't take up too much of your time, so you can be doing what we want you to do, which, of course, is to spend more time here...

Rather than a stretch, it's probably only by loose use of the definition:

    This *is* a (user-) community.
You certainly provide a service to this community.

I'd suggest following your instinct base on the goal.

I can see the survey now...

School: In what aspect do you utilize your time performing community service?

Wug: I put a lot of hours into keeping newB's from frakking up their Droid X's..How's that?

    I have tutored people...kinda...

But most of what I do is tech related. I help people with technical problems for free, on these forums and off. Is that servicing the community.. kinda. I am providing technical service to those in need. Like there is ITS in my school... but they don't know anything. I have recovered thesis papers from dying hardrives. That work was novel and could save people... did I service the community by recovering that data?

Why can't technical service be community service? Or should I feel guilty now and go help out a homeless shelter. I help people with what I am good at... ?

Of course it can. I still believe that the point of the exercise is that you show what you are doing for your local community. Now, if you were to take time to help teach an intro to computers class for the elderly or disabled, that would count...
