That makes sense. But how does me helping people fix their computers and smartphones help people who don’t own computers or smartphones. Your example is an environmental service which does help everyone.

Edit: I see you added to your post.

Wug, this is kinda deep for a Friday night. Can't we just think of songs or make Chuck Norris jokes?

Kidding. I enjoyed thinking about how we all spend time here. Maybe make you a bit more tolerant of the next person that comes along asking how to root their phone

I think it comes down to net benefit. And how your actions help the larger community...

Lol. I think its going to make me do some other form of service as well. I don't think that helping people with droids and computers is community service, I think its good spirited technical assistance.

I don't think you should measure it in terms of monetary value... even the poorest of people can be rich in someways & the richest can be poor... community service is helping & expecting nothing in return - it is what you can offer to make a difference.

Well, we are discussing a defintion and one word can have many. Volunteering at a soup kitched only helps a small segment of the community. Most people in a town will not eat at the soup kitchen. And most people will not receive much direct benefit from other getting fed. In my defintion, community service is time you donate to others for the cause of helping them... be it one-on-one tutoring at an adult learn-to-read program, helping paint a church, cleaning up a dirty park, or yes, helping people solve their phone problems.

What you might find is that if you calculate the total number of minutes spent helping, it may not be all that much. You are probably taking issue with the idea that 6 hours on your couch drinking beer and answering threads using tapatalk = 6 hours of picking up garbage.

Yeah, good luck. I have to go do some community disservice and grade my student's exams. That little community is not going to like me next week

If I go by stg's analysis then I have performed community service in many ways, on and off the forum. I have helped many people and expected nothing in return and have denied compensation numerous times. However on these forums I also have the WugPort thread which I accept donations to, but that's because its a product I developed. The community service I am refering too is the stuff that all the active members do. The RS and others endless help.
