    Noob anxious to learn

Hello everyone. I am very new to smartphones. Recently obtained a used Droid X from a relative for my wife. I still am using a Verizon feature phone. I plan on upgrading soon.I've been reading alot recently about Droids and have many questions.

First... our Droid X is a virgin... never been rooted. It is currently running the latest update version 2.3.3 Gingerbread version 4.5.605.MB810

My main goal is to unlock the phone so I can tether and use the phone as a wifi hotspot w/out going through Verizon. From what I've read I need to root the phone. I've seen a variety of 1 click root programs on the net. Which one do I choose? I've read a few older posts where users phones were rooted & then did the most recent update & they were no longer able to tether/wifi hotspot. Can I root with the current version & will it effect anything? I've also read where Verizon can tell if your phone is rooted by usage & potentially block you. Anyone have any updates out there.

I know 0 about flashing roms or what the benefit is, so I think I'll take this 1 step at a time.

I imagine many other Noobs have likely posted similiar questions, so sorry if I'm repeating this stuff.

    Thanks for your help

What your trying to do is pretty simple and straightforward. Like you said you'll need to root and for that you can either use d3 one click root or zergrush, its your choice. You'll find instructions for using either method in the following link and there's even a step by step video for the d3 one click in the link GB.602! ROOT! Start here! Links to all you'll need to get droid2bootstrap from the market it's about $3 but you'll need it to get in clockwork recovery to install the tether patch so that your able to wireless tether without interference from verizon. Here's where you'll find the patch with instructions WugPacked GB Tether Patch [All-In-One Zips] if you have questions go ahead and ask you'll get plenty of help here. Oh and welcome to the forum...
