As long as your only installing apps from the market you will be fine without. Just read the permissions of the apps. And if you do install apps from other resources be sure you know exactly what it is. Your phone can't be attacked unless you let it happen. And welcome to the forum, enjoy your new phone!!

Welcome and enjoy your new phone. Check out Lookout for a couple things which includes a "virus-checker" of sorts. It can also help find your phone if lost, etc. I've had it pretty much since day 1 with no issues.
I need two DX's.. One to try rom's on and one for MIUI because it's THE daily driver for me so I'm not messin' with it.

Welcome to the droid X forum!!

I 2nd what the others have said, if you download non android/amazon app market/s apps you risk viruses, that being said you should also make sure when you do download android/amazon market apps, make sure you read the permissions, some wallpaper apps ask for permissions, such as address book and gps permissions, that they should have no reason to have access to.
Hope that helps, feel free to ask more questions, this is a great community with a fantastic amount of knowledge.
