Unknown app requesting my GMail credentials

I started getting prompted for my Google account password earlier today, but I don't know what app is requesting it! I recently changed my password, so I didn't think much of it at first. It refuses to take my password, though. Gmail, Google Talk, Google Plus, and all other Google apps work fine with my new credentials. Next time it pops up I'll post a screenshot to see if it jogs anyone's memory.

Is there any way to see what app may be requesting this information?

The only app I downloaded today was Firefox (I wanted to play with the new UI). The first request happened about the same time, but so did my password change so I'm not sure which caused it. I deleted Firefox on a whim to see if anything changed. I got something slightly different, this time. Google Voice prompted me with an account permission request, but it didn't ask for my password so I'm not sure if it was the same issue or not. I deleted Firefox about ten minutes or so after my post, so it still may come up later today.

Does any of that make sense? :-P

Once you've signed in with a Google app, any other may request access as needed, but you won't need to reenter your pw. I automatically distrust any requests for a pw that I don't expect.

Definitely give us a screenie at the next opportunity.

Definitely. Made me nervous as well. Problem is, it came just as I changed my password, so I was expecting it! I just expected it to work... :-)

If you figure out what app it is, and approve it you can try clearing the app's cache, or reinstalling it.

I believe the same thing has happened to me for the past two days. No new apps recently. When I first noticed it, I instantly thought of when I had last changed my password and realized I'd never changed it on the phone. So I thought that was what was up. Only thing is, I changed my password ~ a month ago so it's weird that it is just now asking me for it. Anyway, I entered my password and it wasn't accepted...of course, because I have 2-factor authentication enabled. So I went to my Google Accounts page to generate a new application-specific password for my phone. When I entered that, it also was not accepted. Hmm...not accepting my real password and also not accepting my application-specific password. Time to investigate a little.

What the error is is a sync error. And when it occurs you see a yellow triangle with an exclamation point in the notification bar. It is titled as a Sync Error in the notification pull down. If you cancelled out of the password prompt that comes up then tapped on the notification you'd be taken right back to the same password prompt. Anyway, since it's a sync error I decided to check out what was up in My Accounts. And when I opened my Google account it showed a message about sync being temporarily unavailable and that it'd be back shortly. But I decided pull up the menu and "Sync Now". When I did that, all items produced a sync error. I was on WiFi at the time so I decided to flip over to 3G and see if anything changed. It did, and a full sync of my Google Account completed without any further problems. I flipped back over to WiFi, synced again for good measure and was satisfied when another sync completed successfully.

Fast forward to today on my way to work, obviously on 3G, and lo and behold the same sync error notification appeared. Right away I went over to My Accounts, opened my Google account and manually synced and it worked right away. I haven't yet seen the error again.

My guess is that it's something up at Google. A while ago I had a very similar problem with my Picasa account on my phone. I always thought that it was weird the Picasa account was a separate entry in My Accounts as it is essentially a part of your Google Account...but anyway, when I got that error with the Picasa sync it also would not accept any password I tried. That eventually went away and I haven't seen it since. I think it last happened shortly before the .621 update. I found other similar reports on Google's forums. Maybe I'll check that forum again to see if anyone has reported this current issue.

I'll also report back if I continue to see this error.

    OP,

Does any of that mirror any of what you saw?

EDIT: Looks like it's not an isolated incident and is affecting more than just a couple of Droid X's:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...php?p=28031007 - The second post seems maybe informative. This person says it has something to do with all those Google app updates yesterday. I got a bunch of them. Five I think.

    http://forums.androidcentral.com/spr...ign-error.html

There are a lot more examples, but this should give us enough info to see that it seems to be a problem on Google's end. I'm sure it'll be fixed up, but if you see this error until then, you can just cancel it and clear out your notifications and be fine.

I haven't seen the error since I uninstalled Firefox. After reading your post, I think that was just a coincidence, though. What you described, richard, is pretty much exactly what happened on my end.

Guess it's nothing to really worry about. Thanks!

I cleared all of my notifications and did a manual sync. Everything appeared to work, but it popped up right after it was complete. Google Calendar is the last thing it syncs, but it's working just fine when I open the app manually.

Is this the Google bug you were referring to, richard.eid?
