Disable data (3G) in settings/wireless and networks, or enable airplane mode and turn on wifi.

I should have been more clear. I was talking about using it as a wifi device after I upgrade and have my phone services changed to a different phone. Sorry.

Put it in airplane mode first, this saves battery. Then go into settings and turn on wifi, it will work.
Take it a step further, get a google voice number and download talkatone, free from the playstore, you can send texts and make phone calls over the web

Well you could always just skip the activation screen and have Wi-Fi on , that's what I do with my X and D1

One thing to note, at least on the X, is if you want to use actual gps, you'll need to disable airplane mode for the duration.

I just use tasker to handle this (possibly the best app ever written for Android), and have it swap both at once. With Sygic or a similar navigation app that uses offline maps, or potentially Google Maps in the somewhat near future, you can have complete GPS navigation with no data at all.

Oh, you're battery life will be fantastic as well. I charge my Droid X about 1/4 as often now, maybe less, unless I'm using it for a long GPS drive and am too lazy to plug in the car charger.

/Uses a Droid X with no data/voice plan like it's a tablet, and a Nokia Lumia 720 with no data plan as a phone/text/gps/wifi device. No more stupid fees, considering the only time I needed data was for GPS. Problem solved. I dropped by phone bill from $90 to $15 (added line to family plan) that way.
