Thanks. I was able to root over the weekend using this method. I was hoping to install the latest CM7 RC but I was getting an error related to the kernel. I thought CM7 was built on the GB kernel but I could be wrong. I've landed on MIUI for now but I'd still like to get on CM7 if anyone knows how.
Which CM7 were you trying to use? The officials? If so they are on Froyo which is what causes that issue. Use the unofficials (Pooka/YACK)

Yack:

UPDATE: Looks like Yack didn't install correctly. On boot I am getting the MIUI boot animation and it just loops. I also can't get into CWM recovery for some reason so it looks like I might be doing an SBF back to stock again. I really wish I hadn't taken that .621 update!
Awesome, thank you. I was attempting to use the officials but I am working on installing Yack now. Do you prefer one over the other? Pooka vs Yack?

I'm not as tech savy as most of the people here but i just have a question about this, i have my phone rooted, and i wanna do this update, after my phone started telling me to do it, it's been going slow, and every once in a while a little pop up comes out and say "Service started"
the only problem i have with this is that everytime i try to update it, it says "software update failed" i unrooted my phone, and tried it again, and still says that it failed.
any advices on what i can do? and also any knowledge on that "service started" thing? it seriously pops out about 2 times a minute
You don't want the update if you want to keep root access.
If you still want the update, it's likely failing because something is modified within /system like you're running a custom ROM or theme or bloatware is missing.
well if it will fix my phone from being super slow, and all that, i'd rather do that than have it rooted, im only gonna have this phone till november, and i'll be upgrading to something else after
is there any way to find out what i might be missing? or if something is modified?
if not, how can i restore everything to stock without like losing my pictures, vids, numbers and all that stuff
