Help Updating Android Version to Most Current with Root 2.2.1

I currently have root 2.2.1 with Liberty ROM.

Overall, I am happy with my set up...I rooted quite awhile ago and have done nothing since...now, I would like the most current android version...all while keeping my root status and tether (tether is very important to me).

Is there any way I can update my android version to the latest while keeping my root? I do have Liberty's 'ROM Toolbox' ...if that helps?

What would be the easiest (simplest?) way of going about this?

    Thanks, everyone

You'll have/want to SBF to .602 and reroot. Are you looking to stay on Liberty?

I don't necessarily feel strongly one way or the other if I stay with Liberty...I have to have tether access. Once I SBF to .602 and reroot (given your above links...thank you!) I assume I will have tether access? ...I am currently using WiFi Tether. Is there another tether app better (paid of free) out there?

Another question. I see that I will d/l the Linux files (for SBF)...do I keep my computer in this Linux mode and follow the rerooting directions for Linux? ...or do I restart my computer and do the reroot from my current Windows XP operating system?

    Thank you.

Liberty is probably one of the best roms available at this time on gingerbread imo. You'll need to install wugs tether patch to be able to teather on gingerbread WugPacked GB Tether Patch [All-In-One Zips]

    Thank you.

After you SBF using the script in the Linux distro, you'll reboot into Windows and run the file from the link, instructions for rerooting should be in the link I gave.

Okay, so after a lot of contemplation, I have all the files already to go...I d/l the .ISO for gingerbread .602 (that is what I want to SBF to) per the links above. I tried to copy it to both a USB drive and a CD but have not had any luck with the computer booting from either. I originally had just the .ISO file on the disc. I found this did not work...I then extracted this .ISO file to include- "boot" and "[BOOT]" folders. I attached those to the USB and CD and tried to reboot. Still no go?

I hit my F12 key and have tried selecting all the possible drives. It says that the drive is not available...but I clearly see by USB light on.

It really shouldn't be that hard...any ideas? I have tried all different USB drive letters and both CD-ROM drives...any ideas? Help anyone?
