So if im on rooted GB I just use root explorer and find updater.apk and rename it to update.bak? And I should never have to worry about losing root right

Well theres no file extension, its just updater. You can add an extension like bak to it and it should stop any update from being downloaded. Its easier to use bloat freezer (.99) or TiBU ($3) to just freeze the updater 2.2.1

you likely have some bloatware missing, you can hit the search key as soon as it starts to install to see where the ota fails, you should restore a stock backup or reinstall any bloat you may have deleted/renamed/frozen. Alternatively, you can flash maderstcok or the TBH 340 sbf update.zip to get to 2.3.340. You can't restore a backup on a new system version, do not restore a 2.3.15 backup when you are on 2.3.340.
