Issues with new droidx update (verizon 4.5.596.MB810)

I recently upgraded my Verizon DroidX to Android 2.3.3 via the 4.5.596.MB810 system update they released (through my phone settings>about phone>system updates), and ever since then I've been having a number of different problems..

For the record, my phone has never been rooted or modified in any way.. Here is a short list of some of the problems im having:

    - When im on my main 'stock' homescreen (in other words the home launcher that came with my phone), its really laggy and slow when I slide between screens, to the point where I can see each frame individually as it animates the slide.. sometimes it takes like 3 seconds before it even slides to the next screen and I don't even see the animation at all! But if I use an aftermarket launcher like ADW launcher, its fine.

    - When I go to 'Manage Apps' or 'Running Services' under my phones settings, the list of running applications is very slow when I try to scroll through the list.. Very slow framerate, and sometimes takes a few seconds to move after a swipe, even after the list has been fully loaded! And I have less than 20 items total in the list, so I don't know why its being so laggy.. Similar to the lag im having on my homescreen.

    - When im viewing my Gmail, sometimes when I click on a message it will just reload the list of messages instead of opening the message I clicked on.. But not always. Sometimes it works if I click on the message before the list of messages is finished loading, sometimes it works if I long-press and click on 'read' instead of single clicking, but sometimes that doesn't work either.. It just says "loading conversations" and refreshes the list as if I clicked refresh. But again, not always.

-Not sure if this is normal or not, but when im scrolling through something (for example if I drag my status bar down and im scrolling through my notification list) it will show a transparent looking line moving up or down when I reach the top or bottom of the list.. like if im at the top of the list and I swipe my finger downward trying to scroll further up (even though its already at the top) it will show a transparent block/line coming from the top, as if to say "you can't go any further, you're already at the top of the list".. if that makes any sense. And it happens pretty much everywhere.

    - The 'Contacts' and 'Dialer' shortcuts I had placed on my homescreen prior to updating, no longer do anything.. I click them and they make the sound like when u normally click something but nothing happens, they just don't open anything.. However my main stock homescreen launcher DOES have a new bottom bar with those items in it which work just fine. But when I try to open them from a previously made shortcut it doesn't work - and it also doesn't work when I try to open one of them from my apps drawer either.

I think there might be a couple more things but ill post them as soon as I can remember what they are..

Is anybody else experiencing any of this? Or can anybody offer some kind of advice or help?

The scrolling effect when you reach the top / bottom of a list is what gb is supposed to do.. the next thing to try is a factory reset, you will lose all your apps, homescreen configurations, and data, anything that's not on the sdcard. You can backup your contacts in the contacts app by exporting to sdcard, but everything should be backed up with Google. All your paid apps will be in the "my apps" section once you link your gmail and market account back.. to factory reset, pull the. Battery, reinstall it, power up the phone by holding home + power for about 5 secs .. release, when you see the screen with the Android and exclamation, hit both volume buttons simultaneously .. this will bring up a menu use the volume buttons to navigate the menu, power button to select. Select wipe data factory reset.. do it a couple times to be sure, it will take a minute or two each time, then reboot..

Try only wiping cache first to see if that works, that way you wont lose anything, if you still have problems do a full reset.

    Thanks for the reply!
Yeah I figured the line thing was probably just a normal GB feature, but I figured I'd ask just in case.

As far as a factory reset goes I really want to try to avoid it if at all possible.. However clearing the cache is a good idea and ill definitely have to try that.. Do I still have to do the crazy restart stuff you listed? Also, out of curiousoty what other kind of things can you do/access by restarting this way?

On a sidenote, does anybody else have any input?

I recommend doing a factory reset, this will clear the issues you're having. It does suck to have to setup again but it's a good idea to do so.

I am having the same dialer issue...

  7. #6
I am having a ton of problems with this new update as well. First of all, the black letters on white is jsut like every other phone out there - i loved the white letters on black for all menus, etc. Just throwing that out there.

The MAIN problem I am having after this update is my battery life. Ever since I updated - my battery literally goes from 100% to 20% in 3-4 hours. I have removed all of my widgets and clsoed all Apps that were running, and it still dies in 3-4 hours.

I don't understand why my battery life is so terrible after the update. Any suggestions?

being that you're not rooted theres nothing you can do as far as i know to recalibrate the battery, as wiping the battery stats requires root permissions.. the best thing to do is to take the phone to verizon and make them aware of the issue..

Today I upgraded to the New System Update on my Droid X: ONLY thing I don't like so far: (boohoo) I cannot find that cute green battery ICON that instantly shows how much PERCENTAGE (%) of battery power is LEFT! It was in 'settings' with just one touch on the "Battery Manager", but now is GONE. The same battery "mode" info and "what areas of the phone drains how much" is there, but NOW all it shows at the top is how much usage "IN TIME": "2 h 20m 42s on battery". I'd much-prefer to see what PERCENTAGE is LEFT! Guess this old dog will have to learn this NEW trick! Grrrrrrrrr.

Don't forget you can tap on the curvy line that underlies battery usage time for more detailed usage graphics.

Factory reset will take care of the fast battery drain.
