At the risk (Ha! Certainty!) of repeating what's been answered a zillion times, here are some answers without using the search button or derailing a thread, or digging through 151 pages of a thread seeking a specific nugget of info.

EDIT!!! : To DL a file on your DX, DO NOT USE STOCK BROWSER! It doesn't dl well. Try Dolphin or most any other browser.

This thread is to preemptively answer the common questions clogging every thread currently. It is intended primarily for those who want some questions answered before they take the plunge, as well as those who tried unsuccessfully and want to start the process fresh. Please read the instructions in these links and guides very carefully. If you follow them to the letter you will have a very nice OS running on your DX. If not:

IF MOVING FROM GB LEAK TO NEW GB PLEASE READ!!!:
For easy data restore after flashing GB:
From mycahya, who tested this for p3droid; see p126 of Anyone get OTA 4.5.588??
To restore GB data:
“Clarification:
Root process is confirmed working. For those curious, if you have a bootstrap recovery backup made, you can restore just the DATA portion of it after you have flashed the rooted leak. Steps to restore your data are as follows:
1. reboot into recovery
2. select backup and restore
3. select Advanced Restore
4. select the image from which you would like to restore data from
5. select Restore data
6. Reboot “

My $.02:
For those on GB now who like their setup: Make a backup in (Droid 2 bootstrap!, NOT Droid X) clockwork first. Get to rooted Froyo however you wish. After you've flashed 1,2,3 and rebooted, don't touch the droid- touch all four corners clockwise starting with top left corner (then top right, bottom right, bottom left). This lets you skip the setup. Install bootstrap from sd card (put it there now if you haven't yet) and open it. Bootstrap recovery-OK-reboot recovery. Now go to backup/restore option, followed by advanced restore. Click on your new backup, and an option list will come up- DATA ONLY! Your previous GB settings will magically reappear! Minus deodexing btw. No market sync crap, no TiBu restores needed, no *228, no re-entering passwords for your favorite apps and websites! My OC settings even came back on their own. It's almost exactly like a full restore. Easiest install EVER!

FYI: p3 says no wipes needed before flashing 1,2,3; I wiped data, cache, and dalvik cache first, just because. It never hurts.

UPDATE: It seems you can install the deodexed version over the leak OR the new GB. See the "GB install patch with root" thread at MyDroidWorld to be sure you're flashing the right file first. From p3droid's OP:

"Deodexed Version For Devs and Themers (Can be use by anyone)

This installs over the top of the previously installed 2.4.588 or over 2.4.573"

Let me see about that. There's an md5 sum checker you can use on your computer. I know there is a thread for that someplace here. It may take a minute, my kid is watching dvd on my pc now, so I have to do this via mobile.

Noob question here. How do I get Bootstrap on the SD card for install? I purchased it from the market but I don't have any idea where the .apk is.

Added macpro's super-awesome SBF guide to OP.

To move bootstrap to sd:

Use a good file manager, Root Explorer (heartily recommended app!)) or some such. Go to system/app, find droid2 bootstrap file. Longpress and select COPY. Go back to main, scroll to sdcard and select. Hit the PASTE option. Done!

Still hunting md5 sum checker. I haven't used it. I just make sure the file size DL'd matches the file size shown on the DL site.

Anybody knows an md5 sumcheck link feel free to post it!
