Juice defender can save "juice" haha battery juice that is http://www.juicedefender.com/overview/
Lookout.. think of it like Norton internet security. It functions as an antivirus sort of and can locate lost or stolen phones https://www.mylookout.com/features

I have juicedefender installed and it does a pretty good job helping to extend the juice in your battery but only when you are not using the phone and it is just idle. When you are on the phone doing anything it has no effect. But when the screen goe s off it takes over connectivity controls and only lets a few programs run. Things like phone calls and text messages come through but other things like streaming media can be disconnected unless you buy the paid versions where you can configure certain apps to not be affected. It doesn't work like a task killer that kills the app processes themselves but rather it shuts off things like your data connections like wifi and 3g. It then allows these connections to come on in the background periodically to check for emails and things like that. Now, all of that being said I do notice battery savings when I use it but the only drawback for me is when you first turn the screen back on to do something. It will take a minute for the network to reenable itself, which means you have to wait before you can jump on the browser or use your internet connection.
As for lookout, I have only used it a little. I have had to take my droid x into verizon for a couple of differnet issues and each time they have seen sny kind of security or virus protection apps on it they tell me to uninstall them because their network has security features built into it which don't play well with other security suites from third parties. Maybe someone else can tell you whether or not that is true and if you should install it or not. I hope this helps you somewhat with your decision. Personally, I try a lot of bold stuff with my X because I have become quite good at sbfing my phone back to stock. Lol. You have to be good at it if you are addicted to flashing custom roms like I am.
Also check out avast as it has a way of using root access to install a system file to make it hard reset proof also it is free and has lots of options
