Unroot for Gingerbread update?
Hi all, am new to this forum. It has been very helpful so far, so thanks to everyone for their info.
I am rooted, no mods, themes or Roms (basically wanted the wifi tethering).
My question is: Do I need to unroot before the Gingerbread update?
Thanks for the help.

If NO changes were made other than that app then I believe you will not have to unroot

Correct, as long as you don't remove any of the Motorola apps (bloatware) you can take the OTA. I recommend an app like Titanium Backup to 'freeze' apps from running, then 'unfreeze' them before taking the OTA. Here's a good thread on the subject:

i hastily uninstalled several VZW bloatware apps using Titanium... what problems will I encounter when/if Verizon releases an OTA gingerbread update? or will there be other safe ways to port the new VZW/MotoBlur-flavored Gingerbread?
if I want to see 2.3 at all, will i have to find a way to get those bloatware apps back on my phone and return it to a near-stock state? i'm certain that this question has been asked elsewhere, but it's a big forum... thanks for the help

Yep, all kids of good info here. Glad you got it worked out.

Ok, I downloaded the 2.3 using TBH.
Now, I have ROM Manager. Do I use it to make a backup, and go into recovery mode?
-
Yeah I would make a backup first and then flash it through bootstrap, rom manager probably would do it, but I wouldn't take the chance since it usually causes problems.

Just do it through Bootstrap, not RM...
Quick question, have you ever done an SBF before? If not, know that you will have to do this procedure if you don't like GB and want to return to your previous settings...
Read up on it here if need be:
