Cool Android 2.3 SDK revealed, Gingerbread improvements called out

And finally, here it is! Android 2.3 -- perhaps better known as Gingerbread -- is now official, bringing a host of tweaks that should get the Android faithful pretty stoked. Most notably, the new build is being called out as significantly better for game development, tying in nicely with all these Sony Ericsson rumors we've been hearing as of late. Also on deck is tightly-integrated VoIP support, video calling support via a front camera, better cut-and-paste, and an integrated task manager. Follow the break for the platform's introductory video.

Edit: If it wasn't for the captions on the right side of the foreign dudes head I wouldn't be able to follow.

An official one? I would not be surprised in the least if we never get one since end of life is March.

"Why spend the money?" Is the question I would ask if I was Moto/Verizon.

2.3 was pushed to my DX first thing this morning. Successfully installed but I really don't see what the difference is?? No black status bar. The only thing I notice is that Madden 11 was pushed to my phone. So I don't get what the deal is with this update?

2.2.1 was pushed to your phone - not 2.3. you got a patch, not an OS update.

And can we also all get together and agree to stop posing the damn highlighted EOL table like it's new information? WE KNOW.

I mean, if the OG droid received 2.2, and came with 2.0, I'd assume that this may be somewhat the norm considering the timeliness of OS updates for android. If Gingerbread is supposedly coming by the end of this year, and the Droid X will be cut off in 3/11, I'd say it gives a pretty good chance at receiving what is supposed to be a "milestone" update for android. Froyo was a bust, and we only had to wait 2 months and some days from it's release date to receive froyo. Actually for some less than a month because of the leak in early august. We'll get it, maybe even the day before the X's EOL date....but we'll get it

Begs the question of "what does EOL really mean?". EOL on the VZW table looks like the end-of-sales date to me. Millions of these phones in the market, is VZW really gonna say "okay, thanks, buh-bye" to us? I'd like to think not. I agree w/bcals0087, we'll get it, and maybe even Honeycomb/Icecream as well. Just enjoy the phone until you're eligible for another upgrade!

Let's just be honest. Android is fragmenting this way.

Gingerbread - Newest tweaks "perfection" of the 2.x software for 3G devices
Honeycomb - New overhaul for 4G/LTE superphones.

they're going to need a better way to delineate them if they're going to continue down this "low end/high end" dual OS track. It's going to be like Android and Android Lite or Android and Android+

I would not be surprised if it just went in twos until everything is on 4G - Ice Cream can be the next "low end" upgrade that basically is Gingerbread from a performance standpoint but revamps the UI like whatever Android 4.0 will be called (Jellybean?) so that Low End devices aren't left out of the "new and pretty" loop but still just aren't manufactured with the hardware for top-of-the-line android performance.

As long as there are ****ty smartphones, dumbphones, and netTabs or whatever stupid buzz word is going to be attributed to P.O.S. tablets (and android thinks it belongs on them), they will have this issue.
