Lightbulb Theme Guides.. Where to Start

    UPDATED 6/27/2011

Like most of you here my first Android phone was (still is) a Droid X and wanted to do everything possible to it. Well lots if not most of this information is spread around the internet and under names that people who are new to Android would never know where to look. So for all of you wanting to theme a rom, edit an apk or just starting out here you go this is all done from a computer perspective, not an app on your phone:
I don't claim to be an expert or even good I just know where some of these are located

1.) Have the SDK installed and a jdk. (if messing with .9.png)

    Android SDK
    JDK
(down below in #4 if you are using linux and are new there is an all in one installer for the sdk/jdk that will run in terminal for you)

2: Add the JDK to your environment variables, in Windows: right click "my computer" select properties> advanced system settings>advanced environment variables should be at the bottom then add the location then click on classpath and enter your location of the jdk preceded by a ; and no spaces

3: install eclipse if your going to be editing .9.pngs.

side note, you're probably asking which eclipse you need right? Well it should be the first one listed, Eclipse IDE for Java developers (helios)

    Eclipse Downloads

4: its advisable to have adb set up on your comp. makes things easier pushing and pulling from your phone, or dropbox on your comp and phone.

ADB for MAC.... I don't use a mac so I am not sure how this works.. just passing along

6: if theming apps you need a tool to decompile/extract/zipalign/sign luckily thats easy Apkmanager does it fairly well

Linux apkmanager/7zip install: ThemeR studio by CorCor67

7: making xml edits after decompiling? need something to put them into text and this does it well, Notepad++

    Notepad++ | 5.9
helper script to make xml edits easier <--- this will convert/do your scripts for you.. there are a lot of them if doing cm themes

Ok you've got all that... Now do some reading. No really lots of reading and you can start right here:

[GUIDE] Want to learn how to theme? - xda-developers

Are those .9.png a pain in the arse? Yeah they can be so here is a helper. Watch them in the order posted or you can watch them in order from his channel either will do:

and it can never hurt to learn xml

Ok you've done all that and want to release your them you have made but don't know how to write a script?

This is by no means a complete end all be all start to theming.. Its just a collection of information I have came across. If I find anything else I'll update it accordingly and Im not a themer just an extremely curious person.

Quick note if you are going to theme Gingerbread

*most of the images have moved from framework-res.apk to SystemUI.apk

    * the "wallpaper" on the lockscreen which is black/shaded semi transparent can be edited/created in zz_moto_gradient_bg.png in framework-res.
