    Question SBF without Bootlooping? help....

So at one point my wife water damaged her droid X. The home button does not usually work.. But she has been using it like this for some time. She came home from a concert with it boot looping. Since I can't hold down the power and home button to bring it to recovery mode... I thought hell I'll just SBF it. I had forgotten that any SBF I did in the past ended in a boot loop. I have been trying but have not been able to get an SBF onto this droid X without it boot looping.Since I cant hold home and power to go to recovery a non looping SBF seems the only way. Thoughts?

not really... because an sbf leaves the /data partition alone.. and that's what causes the bootloops.. sometimes you can sbf with out a factory reset.. but not usually...

did maybe the phone get dropped or hit at the concert? if so the bootloop might be due to hardware instead of software

Bootloops are usually caused by incompatible data - thus why you have to get into recovery to wipe it. SBFs don't touch the data partition (they are designed to be used at retail or warehouse fronts to restore a phone while retaining data... thus if at all possible its avoided) If she was on a stock OS (rooted or not) you can sometimes get back in post-SBF without wiping data, just make sure you are using the same OS/ROM version as her. If she was on a custom ROM the chances of getting it to SBF without a bootloop are about .01%, unfortunately.

That being said, you may have a route if you attempt to use ADB. Do you have ADB set up?

You don't need the phone to be functioning at this point for ADB to work. Just gotta get it working on the PC. It is a *possible* solution - the phone may not be booting far enough to be reached by ADB. But you can attempt that. Its either that or you can disassemble the phone and attempt to fix the home button. Froyo and GB both use the home button for recovery entry, unfortunately.

Goose is right.. and from what I've seen it depends on the rom you are running..
What rom was the phone on?
Adb is simple to setup.. Chevyno1 had a thread making it quick and painless with it being the sdk installed

If you can get ADB working you might try fastboot flash of MIUI. The defy base rom uses volume down at the blue led to enter recovery
