Where to Begin Upgrading Old OS

Hope someone is willing to help an out of touch, and out of date Droid X user. I all of a sudden had an urge to update my phone, but unfortunately am a little outdated. I tried doing a Verizon update, but am blocked from doing so. Menu -> Settings -> About Phone -> System Updates

Here's what's under the hood:
System Version: 2.3.340.MB810.Verizon
Android Version: 2.2.1
Kernel Version: 2.6.32.9

I am rooted, and have done a Bootstrap backup. Aside from getting a new phone, what would be the best way to upgrade my OS, and in your opinion what ROM should I go with?

Are you getting an update notice but update failing to install? Or have you frozen/deleted any of the bloat?

You may want/need to try using rsdlite and sbf the stock 340 system again, then update to gingerbread. If you want to keep the option to root your phone after updating to gb, do NOT update to .621!

I haven't gotten any update notices and even Verizon support couldn't figure it out. They said I must have an app blocking it, but don’t know what it could be. I did delete some bloat way back when.Hope this helps

Well, if you deleted some bloat, there's your answer. If you want to update, SBF would be the easier path for you. Unless you removed the bloat with an option to restore it. But as people has already mentioned, the latest update will complicate things for you if you want to root and flash ROMs. If you want to keep your phone easily customizable, SBF to .605, root and don't take any updates. From there you can stick with stock, or improve your phone with gingerbread ROMs like miui or vortex, or ics ROMs.

And I forgot to add; I wouldn't mess with rsd lite. Search the forum for the Linux method for SBFing. So much less hassle. No drivers needed, use the boot disc and all you do is hook up the phone and push a button or two.

If you're still on 2.3.340 you can also install the new 15p radio before you sbf to GB.

You don't even need to SBF with the radio update its an AIO. Did it to my mom's DX yesterday, no issues. Froyo -> GB all in CWM.
