I honestly dont even know what ive done

Background info: I recently began the upgrade from the original Motorola droid to a droid x i got on eBay (it arrived in very good condition, seemed very lightly used), having had the phone for 3 years and having become very accustom to all of the settings and such that i had setup on the pone i didn't want to just start over on the new phone, i did some Google research and discovered that i could essentially transfer everything from my old phone to my new one verbatim by using titanium backup and rooting both phones, id never rooted a phone before and with only a little initial trouble i managed to root the old phone and get everything backed up to my SD card via titanium backup.
Here's where the fun started: As i came to discover, the version of droid x that i had (.621) was impossible to root (as is), at this point i began to haphazardly download a lot of files and programs and somewhat blindly (and in hindsight, foolishly) throw them at the phone, at this point i had made zero progress whatsoever, i then learned about the milestone x process and proceeded to partition my hard drive (i'm using a brand new dell PC if that has any relevance) roughly 50/50 with Ubuntu (side note: i want to undo this if possible), run the Linux SBF (i think) software and it did something (here's where i probably got stupid as a result of frustration) i rebooted into windows and checked if the phone was rooted which it wasn't i then got confused and misread (from what ive since read) the directions and ran rds lite (which did succesfuly root the phone) and i was able to recover everything with titanium backup but i cant/dont know how to get my phone back to "normal" which is important because im stuck on the euro ntelos network (well my phone thinks so) and i cant receive or send calls or texts or anything.
Im not sure what i did wrong (if i even did anything wrong) or if i just need to do a few more steps but im completely stuck and ive read so many posts and watched so ,any videos that their all blurring together and i dont even know where to begin trying. Any and all help would be very very appreciated.

You need to RSD SBF to .621, do some stuff with Verizon to get the data working again, and then the Linux SBF. Its a bit of a process but it can be saved. Its pretty long tho so I'll have to write it up when I'm off work. I'll write it all up in full when I'm off in about 2 hours.

Question: do you still have your D1? If so that's going to make this quite a bit easier (shouldn't have to call Verizon CS)

Ok, here's a bit longer how-to for ya:

    Step 1:

So, first you will need the .621 SBF file. This is for RSD Lite. This to flash your phone back to stock firmware and put it back on a Verizon radio. It will activate at this point, and you will be able to get phone calls/texts, but 3G is going to be b0rked still. We'll fix that in step 2. Relevant links/files below:

.621 SBF File (Follow link, download .621 SBF .7z from OP, unzip and use)

    Step 2:

This is going to either be a pain step or easy. If you still have your D1 active or can activate, swap the phones (i.e. activate the D1, deactivate it, then activate the DX, or if they are on seperate lines swap the phones on the lines and go back) this can be done on Verizon's website. This is the easy way to do it. It *should* fix the 3G at that point (I'm not sure what exactly screws up with the nTelos radio, I just now that 3G won't work even when back on .621 unless this step is performed. Something in Verizon's system has to get reset, this is a way to do that.) Alternatively if you can't do that with your D1, then call into Verizon CS on a phone that is not your DX. As its an issue on their end, something has to be reset. I'm not sure what is exactly, but it has been fixed by numerous people by calling in, saying a variety of things like "refreshing" their package, or "re-authorizing" their data, or something similar.

OK, now we're back to square one. We have a functioning Droid X, stock, unrooted, .621. You can activate it now if you haven't done so already.

    Step 3:

You need to go to the Milestone X to root. DO NOT DO THIS VIA RSD LITE. You probably already have this figured out, but you'll be back in the same boat as before. Also, you can probably delete that Linux partition, assuming you have a spare USB drive or blank CD laying around. If so, 1KDS has made a live disc that will auto-SBF and root. Its basically a custom Linux distro that he's made just to do those two functions. Just burn it to the CD or "burn" it to the USB, then boot your PC off of it, follow instructions as needed from there (its all included in the disc, its super easy. Like "Press 1 to SBF" then "Press 2 to Root" type of deal. No special terminal commands, no extra programs needed, nothing. Make sure you do the SBF AND root. It sounds like the first time you just SBF'd. The SBF by itself will not root it, it is just putting it on an Android system that IS rootable (if that makes sense). If you have issues with the auto-root on the disc, you can boot back into Windows and just use the Zergrush v4 batch script for Windows after the SBF is done.

1KDS ISOs (follow link, find the one for the .604 Milestone X version, get it. Follow Burn/USB instructions per thread)

Zergrush v4 (if the disc has issues)

    Step 4:

Now it depends on what you want to do with your phone. You'll be on the Milestone X nTelos firmware, but because the SBF was performed in Linux the radio is left untouched so it still functions as a Verizon phone. Now we are at a split:

If you want to go to stock, .621, rooted (stock experience, just rooted) follow link here

Otherwise, flash a custom ROM. There's tons out there. If you need any assistance with deciding one, just let us know. Regardless, we're going to have to flash some files in Clockwork, so time to get used to one more program (the most awesomest program, as it lets us run custom firmware :P )

    Step 5:

Its flashing time. Get the Droid X/Milestone X activated if you haven't done so already. We aren't touching the radio from here forward so there's no harm in getting that done if your still on your D1 for some reason. Open the Market/Store. You need two apps. One is called "Droid 2 Bootstrap" the other is ROM Manager. Droid 2 is a couple dollars, its needed to get us back to the right version, and its needed to flash any sort of ROMs/fixes/etc (basically if you want to flash anything to the phone... being as you've never rooted before this may be a new concept, but you are going to have wonderous joy if you ever get into it :P ). ROM Manager has a free and paid version, the free version is fine for our purposes. Regardless, go ahead and download both. Open the Droid 2 Bootstrap app, go in, and hit Bootstrap Recovery. You should get the Superuser permissions popup, grant it, and it should give you a success message. Now open ROM Manager. There will be an option that says "Update Clockwork Recovery" or similar. Go ahead and hit that, grant it Superuser, wait for update successful message.

Ok, now we are rooted, bootstrapped, and ready to get kicking (or more like flashing).
Off to the last step, its flashing time. Download the .zip file of your choice. If you are doing the stock .621 pre-rooted, just download it from the link in Step 4. If you are downloading a custom ROM instead of stock, you will also need the .604-to-.621 images update. This is a custom .zip that is going to flash all the base firmware (kernel, recovery, CDT, etc... basically a bunch of technical mumbo-jumbo) back to the Droid X rather than the Milestone X. Its not needed on the pre-rooted stock .621 ROM as the dev included all these files in the ROM.zip

Link here for .604 to .621 images update.zip (follow link then download from link in post, 7th item down)

Put your .zip files on your SDCard. Take a deep breath, and grab a beer. We're almost there.

    Step 6:

Open ROM Manger, choose option to Reboot into Recovery. Your phone will restart, and you will enter Clockwork Recovery. Now, here you can do a backup of the stock .604 system if you want, but its not really necessary, as we aren't planning on going back to it. What you want to do mainly, is go down to Factory Reset/Wipe User Data, select that, and let it wipe everything on the phone. (Volume keys are up/down, camera button is select) Next go down to Wipe Cache, hit that, and let it wipe that. Now choose Install .zip from SDCard. Go in, find the .zip of your choice, we want to do the ROM first (either the .621 pre-rooted, or whatever custom ROM you chose). Select the .zip, let it install (it'll be a few minutes, kick back). Once its done choose install .zip from SDCard again. If its a custom ROM that needs additional .zips (Google Apps or fixes) then install that, otherwise choose the .604 to .621 images update. install that. No wipes are needed between flashing these two, just do one right after the other.

We're done. You're now installed on whatever you chose. Now its time to get back in and get fooling with whatever you want to do, setting it up, restoring apps, etc. etc. Hit the back arrow to go back to the main menu then choose Reboot to leave recovery.

    Step 7:

Boot in. Its going to be awhile, it always is when you do a fresh install of a new ROM. Let it boot, log into your Google account. No special activation or anything is required (activation is only required when you screw with the radio, which no ROMs are going to touch, except for my AIO baseband updater, but that's a special situation that you aren't going to need, like, ever). Go to Market, get your Titanium, get to restoring. General side-note: user apps+data are *generally* safe to restore. Don't TOUCH system apps unless you want to break everything we just did and make yourself re-SBF.

    Step 8:

Kick back, drink a beer, and enjoy playing with your new toy. Oh, and read up on some custom ROMs if you went to stock. They will make your phone run 100% better, and 1,000,000% more awesome.

Let us know if you need any further help.

Im stuck on step 3, im booted in my ubutu partitian and when i try to open the sbf_flash (per the instructions in the link) i get this error message "There was a problem opening the file /media/PIVOT/sbf_flash.The file you opened has some invalid characters. If you continue editing this file you could corrupt this document.
You can also choose another character encoding and try again." followed by "#!/bin/sh

If you are doing it manually in Linux you don't open sbf_flash. You change its permissions via terminal (chmod) to executable and then execute while pointing it at the sbf file.

If you have never used a Linux box/terminal I'd just boot off the 1KDS disc as mentioned in Step 3. You can delete that Linux partition you don't want then and then just boot off the disc. It will be much, much easier.
