I feel really stupid asking this, but when you install the Milestone X firmware on the phone, you'll still have your cell service, right? Like it'll remember your phone number, etc?

Yes. You will keep the Verizon radio so service is not affected.

I have some experience rooting and flashing ROMs after an SBF to make such actions possible, but this is the first forum where I have encountered the suggestion to SBF before flashing "any" ROM, even when already rooted and running some other ROM at the moment. My question is, if I follow this SBF procedure again on my DX, then flash the AOKP ROM, then later decide I want to go back to the CM7 ROM I am running now by using one of my nandroid backups, can I just wipe everything and flash the older nandroid again? Or would that not work anymore?
You can change ROM to ROM without an SBF, as long as its based on the same kernel/Android version. SBF can give some advantages as its starting fresh, but I'm constantly swapping ROM to ROM. And with nandroids they auto wipe for you. Just go hit Restore and pick what you want

Thanks! That sounds more like what I am accustomed to doing. The CM7 ROM I am running is built on Gingerbread .650, so it looks to me like the AOKP ROM will work OK just by wiping and flashing it, after I make another current nandroid to reverse the process if desired. When I did the original SBF, I had to use RSD Lite on a Windows XP computer (one reason I keep one around - some things just don't like Windows 7) to SBF back to Gingerbread 4.5.602 and from there I flashed the CM7 ROM based on GB.650. It has been running that ROM more or less ever since (tried some other ROMs but liked this one the best). However, reading about the AOKP ROM sounds pretty sweet so I wanted to try it.
I did everything exactly, i am using a USB drive, and everything worked until it got to the file "g66" i think it was, once it hit 92% it screws up, bricks my phone into bootloader loop i guess if thats what you want to call it, can't do anything but bootloader, so i SBF using RSD lite back to 2.3.5 which is .604. I have a droid X but im on alltel, so i SBF'd the 2.3.5 stock alltel image onto it so it would appear as if i had a milestone X, but now, i want to use the ICX custom rom, which is built off .605 verizon, and for some reason, i can't linux sbf flash like all these directions are telling me, it tells me its complete, than pops up a bunch of errors ending in A1 and says Service required, something about a map being blank? than the insert data cable part like normal, and that's where i get stuck at, tried multiple times with the .605,.602,.596 ISO files, so can anyone please help me? O and i have to use linux to flash it so my baseband stays the same. THANKS!!!!!!
4.5.605 was 2.3.4 IIRC, not sure that you can go back from the Alltel 2.3.5 to 2.3.4, like the Verizon 4.5.621 to 4.5.605/602/596 will result in a soft brick as well. So we're clear, you can flash it again with the 2.3.5 Alltel file and be back up and running if you haven't yet.
If you flash the Alltel file like 1kds said and get up and running your can flash 605 roms over .621 and keep the upgraded radio

Okay, i think i understand, but ems3 what are you saying? that if i go to alltel .621 i could than get my ICX cause it would work that way? and yes, i've soft bricked my phone more than 10 times lol, and i made progress!! Before i read your guy's comments, i decidedd to try something, i used to have verizon .596 custom roms, and still have my alltel radio, so after i reverted back to .604, i rooted, and restored my system to hateraid 2 rom, and it worked! it changed everything as if i was on verizon network, except i kept my alltel radio, i had to re program my phone, but no biggie, so after i got back to .596, i tried to do the linux flash just the straight .596 (as offered here) and everything worked, it did exactly how you said it would, than at the end, after everything was verified, it said on my computer screen, to reinstall battery hard reset etc, but on my phone it was stuck back into the bootloader 'loop' the error was 30.04 under that it said A5,70,70,00,1F than said service req'd new map blank and the data cable thing, and so once more, i had to revert back to the stock alltel 2.3.5=.604,did anything i say spark a thought to anyone? as to how i can find the missing square? or am i still crap outta luck? thanks.
