I take no responsibility for what happens to your phone during or after this process.
This is for Android 2.2.1 “Froyo” OTA
This method does not always work.
I didn’t make any of the apps that were used in this guide.

    Things you will need—
    -Droid X
-File manager (I use Astro) You can get it in the Android Market for free
    -Micro USB charge cord
-Computer with internet connection (PC or Mac)

Go to Settings-->Applications-->Checkmark "Unkown Sources" While still in Applications go to Development-->Checkmark "USB Debugging" for safe measures.

    How to root

    Step 1—Get your Z4Root1.3.0.apk here

Step 2—Connect your phone to the computer via the micro USB cable. Open your phone on the computer like a hard drive.

Step 3—Copy the .apk onto your phone’s SD card root. Put it in a place on the SD card where you can find it. (I was using a Mac for this so I could just drag it) Now disconnect your phone from your computer.

Step 4—Open your file manager, find your “Z,” there will be a file that is called z4root.1.3.0. Click it, hit “Open App Manager,” click “Install.”

Step 5—There will be an app called “z4root” in your App drawer. Open it, click “Permanent Root” This may take two tries, if it gets stuck on “Running exploit in order to obtain root access…” for more than five minutes, you may have to battery pull. Do this again and it will most likely work. Your phone will reboot.

Step 6—After your phone reboots, go into your app drawer and there will be an app called “Superuser” the icon is a skull and cross-bones. Open it, it should say “su is up to date”

    Congratulations you are now rooted!

This worked great........... thanks. Now that I have rooted my phone, I have installed setcpu, juice defender and titanium backup. All seems to be going great. I noticed that a whole bunch of apps are always running in the background now that I have rooted.Theres like 17 or so apps running now where there used to be maybe 4 or 5. I am using advanced task killer (free) to check this. Any ideas on how I can manage these apps and keep them from running until I want them to? Noob here and greatly appreciate any help offered1............... Thanks................... Jim

Give my post a thanks if it helped! I do not know how to stop them running, I just let them run, never really noticed them. Maybe battery goes down to around 30% being unplugged and tethering from 7-4 and I'm around 60% around the end of the night if I don't tether. Maybe just kill them with ATK? Most people will say they are useless (I'm one of them) but whatever floats your boat. I just didn't see a need for. You might have a different use for your phone than I do.

What apps are running? If you have widgets then they will always be running. Get rid of the task killer Its really not needed. This is an app that is always running for sure. Also no need for Anti Virus if you have it.

Good note on the widgets, I didn't think about those, but he said that he had some running before root and more after? Unless he did install a lot of widgets after root?

Could be. That and apps like ad free and SU run periodically. But the root apps are nowhere as invasive as bloat.

Edit: just checked my log and I have zero root apps running. Maybe he might need to do a hot reboot to kill those processes and see what pops up.

How many times have you tried?

    Battery pull and try again

I had to battery pull twice when I first rooted
