Pseudo-noob Needing Some Guidance
Hi all! I would first like to introduce myself -- I've had my DX for quite a while -- almost 2 years, I think.
Anyway, about a year ago, I decided to start playing with the phone to see what I could do as a rooted system. I have been lurking here for quite some time on and off since. Unfortunately after rooting the phone, and installing a couple of things, I've been sidetracked for quite a while now, but I'd like to get back into this.
My DX is running System Vers 2.3.340.MB810, Android vers 2.2.1.
I used z4Root to root it (read rOOler's Guide way back last year).
I have Bootstrap and Ti Backup installed as well.
So here are my questions...
1) Ever since rooting it, I've noticed that any system updates fail to install. Not sure if I have somehow screwed that up.
2) I would like to try a new ROM, maybe Liberty or Apex, but since I'm essentially a moron when it comes to this, I'm going to need some hand holding, so thanks for your patience.
That's about it for now, I'm sure I'll be asking more as I get into this.
Thanks in advance.

1) yes, your modifications to your phone prevented the updates from being installed. Not a bad thing and no biggie.
2) any and all new rom development for the x is on the gingerbread kernel. You will have to burn the 1kds Linux boot disk for 602 to get on the gingerbread kernel. Then Petes one click is used to root gingerbread. You will need a computer. There is lots of info here to help and if you've got any questions don't hesitate to ask...
PS... I always suggest that you export your contacts to your sd card for future import...
Depending on what your looking for in a rom, miui is by far the most customizable though battery life isn't the greatest. I run MIUI daily and the battery life isn't that awful bad and I think it is absolutely the best rom for the x. Others do have better battery life but the customization doesn't even come close.

Thanks for the quick reply. The good news is that if I brick this phone, my contract is up anyway so I can always upgrade

Don't worry about bricking... To brick the DX you would practically have to throw it into a lake or run it over with ur car

What about using the Google Contacts sync? Would that do the job just as well? Also, do you have any tips for another noob who's rooting and upgrading to a ROM for the first time?

Using Google to backup/restore contacts will also work... I've had multiple copies of contacts restore for some reason in the past so I just uncheck auto sync of my Google account and import my contacts from the sd... Both will work, I've just had some issues with the Google restore...

Burn yourself an SBF disk if you haven't already. Its a Linux boot disk from 1kds that will wipe your phone to out of box condition . Familiarize yourself on the SBF process and have the disk available prior to tinkering. Anyone who flashes roms or mods has had to SBF and you will to

I went to download the 602.iso file but it appears that the link is broken (at least for the one that is labeled as being able to root through D3 or ZergRush method). Can I still root the phone if I D/L the other 602 link?

ya... the other iso just doesn't have that script: so you can just get the rooting script and run it

actually I tried the dropping it in a lake (actually it was one of my fish ponds) and the DX recovered just fine after giving it enough time to dry out. As far as rooting 602/605 I used petes root tools and it worked great.
Cheers
