Question General Question on Wifi tether/hotspot

I'm new to installing ROMs, but decided to make the leap because I'm really wanting wifi tether with infrastructure mode to provide internet for my wife's tablet, and kid's 3DS's while on the road. I was under the impression that Wifi tethering was supported natively by Android, and was typically included in the Networking settings, just removed by my carrier so they can charge me and additional $20/month for 2 Gigs when I'm already paying for "UNLIMITED" data. I tried one of the RevNumbers GB CM7 ROMS, however as it turns out, it appears to be disabled in the nightlies for that. So I went back to the stock ROM and started searching for ROMs that supported wifi tether natively.

I'm seeing mixed information it seems like. With some posts I'm seeing people say Vortex supports it, and it works well. Then I see a post from a person who is using Vortex but to get wifi tether, they are installing android-wifi-tether from googlecode, then they have to jack around with it to get infrastructure mode to work. I've seen some posts that say Libery does wifi tether really well with this, then others again that are having to use barnacle for wifi, which is ad-hoc only as I understand it.

I think I'm missing some fundamental piece of information on Android, it's support for wifi tethering/hotspot functionality, and which ROMs will use it. Very confused.

    Help?

    Thanks,

    -Tim

Sorry DirtyDroid, lost me there for a sec. 'patchvon', I'm thinking you meant to say 'patch on non-2nd init roms', but can you confirm?

If that is the case, you are saying just install a non-2nd init rom, and install the wifi apk file, and I should have Infrastructure mode wifi tethering available?

    Thanks,

    -Tim

After googling it, I'm having a hard time finding a source for 'wifi.apk' that I trust, is this really just the android-wifi-tether app available @ googlecode or something different? Is there a specific version I'm looking for? Where should I go to download?
