How to Use Audacity to Make Custom Ringtones

Audacity is a free program that lets you create ringtones from your own mp3s. You can choose the specific part of song you want, fade in the beginning, fade out the end, raise or lower the volume, and add other effects. Here is a how to use the program.

    Open Audacity

Click File, then Open. Navigate to the mp3 you want, click on it, then click Open.

Using your cursor, highlight the section you want to use, then in File, click Export Selection as Mp3.

In first run, you need to tell Audacity where the Lame.enc.dll is. It’s in C/Program Files/Lame for Audacity. It will then export that slice of the song as an mp3. Open another instance of Audacity, and open that slice of song in it. To fade in/fade out, choose Effects, and then your choice.

Once that’s done, click Export as mp3 in File.

Close Audacity, copy new ringtone to sdcard in phone and apply it as ringtone to default, or contact ringtone.

I have this write up on my laptop with screen shots of what I'm talking about. Here is the link to my dropbox for it:

Here's the page to download Audacity:

And the one for Lame (allows you to export as mp3)

Good info, slim. I've been doing it this way since my old blackberry. Definitely the easiest way to make a ringtone.

    Thanks for posting.

You're welcome. lol I've been using Audacity for ringtones since I had the Motorola v325 flip phone. A couple of seem edits and bam! My custom ringtones and wallpapers....no money given to the big, evil, money hungry VZ.

Lol, I have been using since the LG vx8300 days. Good times. I didn't know they had a windows version though. However, I just use ringdroid now because for convenience of doing it on my phone.
