Contacts set to sync to Google but not showing in Google [Droid X]

I'm new to the Android platform and have tried not to post a question as elementary as this one, but I cannot figure this one out on my own. I did search but perhaps I missed something.

My contacts were put onto my Droid X from my iPhone by Verizon. I have auto-sync of calendars, contacts and Gmail set up. According to the phone the sync is a success each time. When I go to my gmail account I click contacts and the only true update of those contacts is that it shows me which contacts were stared on the android. I have 6 contacts in total according to gmail and at least 50 on my phone. I feel like there is something that I am missing.

Does updating contacts on the phone not update them within gmail (accessible via the web)? Or do I need to learn how to backup the contacts to SD, export, and import to Google? It seems odd that it would be like that, but I am eventually going to root the phone and when I do, I'd like to know contacts I enter into my phone are safe.

Alternatively, backup assistant is provided by Verizon. I assume this means if I use that service I can have them sync my contacts to any phone I opt to use on their network, correct?

Yup backup the contacts and then import them into Gmail. The good thing is that you will only have to do it once and they are there forever.

Ok, but what about new contacts that I add to the phone? Do I backup and import again?

When you add or remove a contact either from Google or your phone, it syncs usually right away so there's no need to do a backup.
