Only format the SD if it seems to be problematic.
You will lose everything on the card if you format it.

    Unhappy

I have done a factory reset. I was hoping that would take my phone back to before it was rooted. It has not. Why is that? I am trying to take my phone from 2.1-version 1 rooted to 2.2 rooted. Can anyone help me to get there from here? I don't care how I get there. Please give me simple directions. Thanks in advance.

I currently can't get the OTA update. It downloads but won't install.

You need to use the 2.1 SBF to get back to stock if your rooted.

Yes!! Factory Reset cleared all the issues I was having with FroYo! When I did the reset all my contacts were still there without their pictures and my photos in my camera had all disappeared. Everything when smoothly and I am much happier having to rest my phone n all.

Factory Reset eliminates user data on the phone, but does not "restore" your phone to an "out of the box" state regarding System Files, which is what you mucked with when you rooted.

You can upgrade to 2.2 from rooted 2.1 just fine. Your update won't go through because you deleted or renamed system .apks (bloatware) and the update will only go about 1/3 of the way on the status bar before saying "Update failed!" if it doesn't find all system .apks in place, installed, with the right permissions.

You don't have to SBF - you can (while rooted) download and reinstall all the apks you removed - but since you're going to factory reset it anyway once you've upgraded, either one is just as much hassle so take your pick.
