Deleting/switching from "original" Gmail account?

When I first activated my phone I made a really random Gmail account to start up. However, I'd like to change from that if possible. When I tried to simply delete it, the phone warned me that the account was used by many parts of the phone and could only be deleted by resetting the phone to its original factory settings, which would also make me lose everything I had on it (specifically contacts, since I just got it anyway.) So is there any way to simply get rid of that account and use a new one that I've since created?

Well. You can just export out the contacts and re-import them to the new account via the web

But if you bought any apps it would be linked to the old Gmail account.

My suggestion. Just use 2 accounts and send out the second one as your contact info and the first for system/phone stuff.
