City ID – Frequently Asked Questions

    What is City ID?

City ID is an enhanced Caller ID feature that displays the city and state of both incoming and outgoing calls.

City ID identifies more than 20,000 cities in North America, and more than 200 countries worldwide.

How do I get City ID?

City ID is a preloaded feature on select mobile devices with U.S. wireless operators.

Why is City ID preloaded on my device?

Unrecognized numbers can be a frustrating experience on mobile phones. City ID provides additional information with incoming calls to help wireless subscribers identify who is trying to reach them. City ID comes fully integrated on mobile handsets to provide an out-of-the-box free trial and seamless user experience.

How does the Free Trial work?

From your first incoming call, City ID will display the city and state of the caller’s number. The free trial is for 10 or 15 days, depending on your wireless operator.

After the 5th incoming call from device activation, City ID presents a one-time Welcome message to introduce the free trial period with the options to Subscribe Now or Continue Free Trial.

After the trial period ends, City ID will present an option to subscribe or discontinue the service. Simply select Subscribe to continue City ID at $1.99/month or No to decline the feature (after declining you will not be prompted again). Be sure to use the designated buttons to make your subscription choice – hitting the “end” or “back” keys will continue the free trial in a reminder mode.

Does City ID run in the background on my device?

No. The City ID application is queried whenever a call is made or received, which loads it into memory. The application exits after City ID responds with the results of the query or with an “unsubscribed” status. Many devices leave City ID in memory (similar to other applications) until the handset requires memory for another task. Although City ID is in memory, it is not running. There is no need to use a task killer to shut it down
since it is not running, not using any CPU time and not blocking any other application from claiming its memory.

    Can I uninstall City ID?

Since City ID is a preloaded application, it cannot be uninstalled completely from the handset. However, once unsubscribed, City ID will remain as an icon on the device and be available for subscription should you decide at a later time to sign up.

Does City ID collect location information of incoming callers or mobile subscribers?

No, there is no location or GPS functionality associated with City ID. It is simply a database, on the device, of area codes and exchanges that displays the city and state of where an incoming number is registered

IMO, the easiest way to handle these apps you do not wish is to use root your phone (easiest of course being one click root, there are many) and then BUY a copy of titanium backup pro. With titanium backup pro you can freeze selected apps which will prevent them from staring up and the icons will no longer show in the app drawer.

If you need them back for some reason simply go back into titanium and unfreeze..

    Done
