the stock wiring on the supplied usb cable is different than that of aftermarket cables, i personally dont know what is different but have read discussions here in this forum, something about a signal wire not in most aftermarkets or whatever....
but i too had the same issue a while ago using an aftermarket cable - over and over the same issue, then finally got my hands on my original cable and it went perfect!!!!!
Addicted to technology but don't always get it!

Hmm.. Interesting. I mean, it's not one of those cheapy generic usb cables either, it comes from an LG phone... now if I could find my moto usb and try, that would be awesome!
