preforming the factory reset seems to have fixed the problem with both the camera and youtube! Thanks! Still not quiet sure what happened to cause the issue...

Okay good glad you got it working.
But yes its a very odd problem.
For sure the first case I've heard of it.

I'll have to look through my recent updates...
I did load 2nd Init, but I don't think that would tweak the cam or being able to see video on YouTube?
I do have a clockwork mod backup for restore, but I've been thinking of a ROM anyway, only for the Defy, not DroidX.
I have the exact symptoms as the OP.

Yes. Same problem. One day the camera preview just stopped working. Because the camera preview just goes black, I can no longer use the barcode reader. But I'm not ready for radical surgery like a data wipe. I'll probably live with it, and SBF it back to stock when I am ready to do a trade-in.

Hard to believe... I uninstalled 2nd Init, now camera preview, YouTube, and Barcode scanner work!
It was 2ndInit for Defy that was the culprit, perhaps messing with the hardware layer at boot?
Whew.
Guess I'll try CWM recovery next time.
What happens with my Nandroid I made using 2ndInit? Will only 2ndInit restore it?
