Backup, Root and ROM. What's latest methods 9.23.11

I know these questions are the same ones asked a million times. I'm not new here, I've searched and read thousands of posts. Great help. However, most of the posts seem dated and the techniques from one post to the other contradict and/or modify procedures. I've looked for current methods and think I could Root OK. and ROM. But JUST to make sure, I am asking as well as putting a date in my title so it is referenced correctly for anyone else. So up to date:

    1. How to back up prior to Root? (I have Astro File Manager and backed up current apps to SD. But what else needs to be backed up and how?)
    2. Current easiest/least amount of steps/foolproof way to Root?
    3. Rooted backup? (assuming it is still TI)
    4. ROM, OK I know this is a can of worms, BUT are there any that are free of dreaded bugs and battery life? (MIUI is what I am hoping for, I hear the latest release fixes the battery issue)

Thank you for anyone who can correctly answer these questions.

edit: I am on Gingerbread 605

first of all what system are u on gb or froyo

no way to back up system prior to root you can use mybackup to back up apps

if on gb d3 one click root if on froyo z4root

once rooted you can back up system and apps through clockwork recovery

MIUI is a nice rom the only bugs left that are effecting me is not able to watch video from apps or sights but dxc is working on the fix for that as we speak

That is exactly what I wanted to hear. Where is the best place to keep up with the MIUI updates? I have all the RSS feeds coming in, so I do see most news. I have the MIUI site bookmarked, but I don't go there very often. Perhaps the best way is to just go there every so often and poke around to see if they fixed the video issue, which is a killer for me because I do go on Youtube a lot. As soon as that is fixed I will root and ROM. But by then, who knows, this post will be old and there will be better ways to root and rom and backup. I just wish there was a way for all the obsolete method posts to be deleted from the forums. That just confuses the current methods.

If you haven't rooted yet jrummy16 just released his app manager in the market and you do NOT have to be rooted to back up apps and data
