Freezing keyboard

Okay well, I was using my phone as normal one day. And then all of a sudden it started freezing when I used punctuation. I can't use the multi-touch keyboard to type a period, exclamation mark, or double tap the spacebar for a period. If I do try to use them my phone will freeze. Then I tried to use the home button to disregard it, and the keyboard is shown on the home screen. The only way to get rid of it is to turn the phone completely off with a battery pull. I have restarted and pulled that battery out for several minutes and the problem continues. I've tried rebooting the phone, but nothing has worked. For now I am teaching myself how to use swype because that is the only thing that works. Please help.

From the home screen; menu key, settings, applications, manager applications, all applications, find keyboard and tap on clear cache, if that won't fix it, go back and clear data as well.

I tried what you told me, and I don't have the option to clear cache, should I just clear data?

Do just data then, then reboot.
