How do I merge my phone contacts into my google contacts.

When I very fist got my droidx on release day I cleared all of my contacts out of my gmail by accident. They were put in by a blackberry and some 3rd party software and were weird so when I tried to fix it I lost them.

Anyways. On my Droid X I have all of my contacts under phone contacts and if I display group for google it has like 5 contacts who are saved in my email.

Is there a way to get all of my phone contacts to my google contacts without manually typing them all in from my gmail?

Login to backup assistant online (www.verizonwireless.com/backupassistant) You can download all your contacts as a .csv and then you can upload them to Gmail using an import contacts setting. This must be done on a computer, though.

It's also good to save the Backup Assistant formatted .csv as a backup for backup assistant (lol) - their servers SUCK!

BTW. Is there not a way to make them manually sync ? Or is there a way to only use my google contacts and get rid of the phone contacts without messing anything up?

It would be nice to be able to add someone to the phone and it appear in my google contacts on gmail and vice versa.

EDIT: looked at my phone. This is a 3 step process.

    1. Contacts press Settings hardkey. Go to More. Settings. Check "Phone Contact," "Google Contact" or Both to decide how new contacts are created *I RECOMMEND BOTH - it will automatically link them and then backup contacts to both Gmail AND backup assistant as BA only recognizes Phone contacts - this will be useful if you ever leave Android*

    2. Go to Accounts>Google Account>Settings - Check "Sync Contacts."

    3. Hard press homescreen, select Power Control widget (not sure if it's Moto or Android widget) and make sure the Sync icon has a green light. If not, press it to enable Sync.

New contacts will now update to both Backup Assistant and your Gmail account.

Backup Assistant will only backup Phone Contacts, never google contacts, facebook, twitter etc.

Gmail will only backup Google contacts, never Phone contacts, facebook, etc.

If you want them to mirror each other, you need to get ALL of them one one of the servers, Export to .csv, then Import to the other. Let your phone sync, then link the contacts if it doesn't automatically.

Lengthy, but you only have to do it once.

This happens to me. Workaround that has been re-creatable for me: Sign out of MyVerizon, then Sign Back in.

Reloading backup assistant, reloading the page, or navigating away from backup assistant then clicking it again without logging out of My Verizon then back in will leave you staring at the red & black arrows FOR HOURS - TRUST ME. Signing out and then back in once in the same browser has magically worked a few times for me.

It also plays nicer with Explorer than Firefox.

If you have issues getting the scrollbar to work (or even appear), edit any contact and save it. This refreshes the interface.

Backup assistant also logs you out every 5-10 minutes (even if you're actively using it). so do things in small batches.

This is a nice write up. I have learned to simply use google contact for all of my address book needs...much more reliable.
For example...when I add a new number on my phone...I will always go to my computer and formally add it to my Google contacts.

As stated already...backup assistant will NOT back up all of what you see (or think) in your phone's contact list. And then every so often...I will export my phone contacts, my gmail contacts, facebook contacts, all contacts. Its four separate files exported to your sd card and then you are good to go.
