Having trouble updating rooted 2.1 to 2.2...Software Update Failed

Hey guys,

So I rooted my Droid X shortly after getting it. I haven't done any major changes other than installing "root necessary" apps and adding a theme to change the notification bar to black. Other than that, I havent removed any system apps, bloatware, or anything of that nature. I was under the impression that with the topical application I had followed, I would be able to update to 2.2 Froyo in a cinch, just that I would lose my root privileges, which is OK. Well after downloading the update and trying to apply it, my phone restarts and says "Software Update Failed."

So Im not too sure what is causing this. Do you recommend I un-root and then try? Or flash back to a leaked 2.1 and try to OTA 2.2?

Any suggestions?

quickest way would use the SBF instead of trying to decipher what the problem is. it probably is the theme but i cant say for sure.

Yup it's definitely going to be your theme (not root) that's preventing your update. SBF is probably the quickest way to do it or you can replace your framework-res.apk and services.jar files with stock ones and that should get your update back on track.

I know I cant help much but I had the same problem. I was on 2.1 rooted with bootstrap and rom manager just for easier access to nandroid backups and I had the same issue. No custom themes or anything done - just update failed. Ended up I had to reflash the sbf which failed the first time restarted the phone with a message stating "invalid code plug in usb to program", But a second sbf attempt was the trick... what didn't make sense is that it was if nothing had ever happened all my apps and data were in place just lost root, then my ota went through.. Oh well good luck..

OK I am having the same issue, Rooted still on 2.1 removed some bloat and using ADW launcher. I haven't done anything else to the phone beside DL some apps.

This SBF I keep reading about what is it, how do I get it, and how do I use it? I want to upgrade to 2.2 then look into the 2.3.15 update. and specific help is greatly appreciated.

I was rooted 2.1 to 2.2 OTA no issues.

the sbf is a file you would use to flash the phone back to 2.1 - just as if it came out of the box. It can only be used on 2.1... theres alot of information on this forum- believe me I used it... do a google search for rootzwiki to find the rest... good luck...

Yes I got the link, thank you. I found that link earlier but the RSDLite fails to install. I'll get the exact error once I get home because I use my laptop for all my Dev and stuff like this.

Hopefully I can find a RSD that works... Anyone?
