Rom Manager Installation, Start to finish (Tutorial)
Note: I had to edit this post to remove some links, if you need help finding the files feel free to PM me. The links to the files I had to remove, can be found via the rootzwiki page. Try googleing something like "rootzwiki droid x". The Post your are looking for on the page is "Return your DroidX to stock unrooted 2.1:". Cheers.
I'm not trying to step on anyones toes, this is the method I had to go about getting clockwork recovery and 2.2 stock rooted working correctly. I want to give major props to TheBeavertownKid for his write up over here: How to: Install Rooted Foyo 2.2 via ROM Manager Alot of this tutorial is based on his research, I will also give credit to his sources used in this tutorial.
Skip to step 2 if you are completely stock.
Skip to step 3 if you are already fully rooted.
Step 1. If you are currently not rooted you must have a stock 2.1 android installation. If you do not have at least 2.1-Update 1, you must do an sbf flash and a factory reset. (Thanks to rootwiki for their write up, note I only cover windows here, check out their tutorial [url removed use google] if flashing from Linux)
a) Download "the_gift" [url removed use google] (this includes the drivers and sbf files needed)
b) Download RSD Lite [url removed use google] (credit to MyDroidWorld)
c) Unzip the RSDLite package and Install RSDLite (You can use 7-zip, WinRar, and Winzip to name a few)
d) Move the pst_flash.ini (included in RSDLite Zip Folder) file into the following folder --> Program Files/Motorola/RSDLite
e) Unzip "the_gift" and then Unzip and Install the drivers that apply to your operating system.
f) Unzip the SBF file into any folder, just make sure you can find it.
g) Open RSD Lite and click the browse button to specify the unziped SBF filename / location.
h) Put your Motorola Droid X into bootloader. (turn phone off and hold volume down and the camera button while pressing the power button)
i) Wait for your computer to recognize your phone, when your device shows up, click on it and click Start. You are now on your way to stock 2.1.
j) Not everyone will need to preform this step, however I did, If you get stuck in a boot loop will need to do a battery pull, reseat the battery and boot you phone while holding the home button untill you see the android (release the power button when you see the "M" logo but keep holding Home). Press the search button, use the volume rocker to navigate to wipe data/factory reset, press the camera button navigate to yes, and press the camera button. Your phone will now do a factory reset, when done. select reboot now, and you shold boot into stock android 2.1
Step 2. Root your phone. There are several methods to this. You a can do the long version using ADB, a one click app, or Easy Root from the android market. I will cover 1-click root here(easy and free). Note You will need the latest .net framework 3.5, Windows 7 comes with this by default, you will need to install on windows xp if you have not already. Download it Here
a) download 1-click root here [I think this ones safe?] (Thanks to Alldroid for this)
b) On your phone goto settings --> applications --> development --> and enable USB Debuging
c) Unzip DroidxRoot.zip, and run Droid X Root
d) note you will have toggle your bluetooth on and off at one point (may take a few tries) so be sure to follow the directions on screen
Step 3. Download Bootstrap by Koush. You can get it in the market for a donation or you can download it off their website here. If you downloaded from their web site place it on your sd card and use your "files" app to located and install the package. (make sure you have settings --> applications --> Unknown sources enabled). Tab bootstrap recovery, tap allow, and you should get a success message.
Step 4. Download the latest Rom Manager from the android market. You can click here if you are looking at this on your phone.
Step 5. Open Rom Manager (Find in App Drawer) and press "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery" and select "Droid X" and wait for it to download then click "Allow"
Step 6. Select "Download rom" then find the rom you are looking to install, (note, some roms, such as flyx, will require stock 2.2 to be installed first. You can do this via rom manager, under stock roms)
Step 7. When your download is complete (shown in the notification bar, do not click clear or you will need to restart the download) tap on the notification. Be sure to check the Backup Existing ROM, and Wipe Data and Cache boxes, then press "OK" (note these may not be required for your particular case, but it is a best practice to do so this will only wipe your applications and settings your files are safe on your SD card)
Step 8. Your phone will now reboot into recovery, backup, wipe, then install the rom.
Step 9. After you install your new rom be sure follow steps 3-5 again, otherwise rom manager will not work correctly. (you must install and reflash both)
Step 10. Enjoy your new rom
Note should something go horribly wrong, there is a tutorial here on unbricking your phone. Good Luck!

Well I could do a video if people would find it useful... lol
And thanks but the real credit goes to the authors of the original write ups. This is just more or less a merger of all the tutorials. Plus some personal experiance getting this working. I tried to be as clear and straightforward as possible.

I smell a thread closing/link deleting coming on for posting links to the .SBF, etc. Mods have been frowning on links to files which Moto has C&Ded.
Maybe point users to the websites that have the links for the files, rather than direct-linking.

Ok, I wasn't sure 100% on the sbf's or not. Is it just the sbf? Or rsdlite as well? Any nods want shed some light on this I will update as soon as I know what needs to be taken out

Hey iamdh4 obviously I am not a mod on these forums but I'm going to have to ask that you remove the links to rootzwikis page. DXF does not allow links or links to links to the SBF or froyo update.zip because of the C&D motorola sent out.
I advise removing the links and just referencing RootzWiki. If anyone doesn't know the URL they can PM you.
If a mod comes across this thread they will ask you to do the same and possibly close the thread untill you offer to fix it and ask for it to be reopened
Best of luck, really appreciate the guide its great and really well written. Just trying to help out.
Yurdle
