Bump.
I tested this out two days ago on my brand new Droid X running 2.1 and it rooted it flawlessly. I also did it on my cousin's fiance's original Droid last night, (it's running on an OTA update of Froyo) and it worked for him as well. I downloaded it straight to the phone and rooted. I proceeded to install Free Wifi-Tether for Root Users and connected my iPod Touch 2G 32GB to his 3G connection without a hitch.
This is essentially EasyRoot but it's entirely free. It supports a one-touch root+unroot and there are a couple other options. It doesn't give you the option to install BusyBox and whatnot like EasyRoot does, but you can just as easily get those from the Market, etc. Don't be lazy. You can save a log of the root process, so if it doesn't support your device or something goes wrong, you can find out what happened and message the developer with detailed information. There's also the option to execute a temporary root. You can root your device and do anything that requires root access, then be automatically un-rooted when you reboot your device.
It's really quick, easy, simple, and completely free. I highly recommend it. Thank you for posting about it here, Garemlin.

+1. worked great with 2.1. Once I updated to 2.2, doesn't work (says it does, but wireless tether won't run).
The Droid was BORN great

Interestingly enough I somehow got root. I used an SBF flash recovery after an attempted clockwork recovery did me wrong. I just got it back this morning and was dreading having to reload all the apps and re-set everything back up. Fired up Titanium Backup did not and could not get root so it shut down. So I know I did not have root at all.
When I saw this thread I figured WTH I am a reflash pro now. Ran the progrm and it said it worked. But like the OP said, when I went back to T-Backup or SETCPU.... no root. I did no file manipulation at all on the system and was running the phone as normal setting things up. A bit later I figured I would do some cleaning up of the SDcard and fired up Rootexplorer by habit. What comes up? the su verification program and <granted root access>
Wish I could tell you exactly what I did but, it is possible to do it.

Howdy,
I used the universal androot. It worked very simply with a log file created. Then I installed root explorer, Gave it SU permission. Used root explorer to move SU from system\bin to the system\xbin folder. Booted into recovery, And applied the update zip. Froyo+ Root working fine here
