I want to root my phone but I'm scared! Help?
1. Ive read a few threads and understand the potential rooting gives my phone but overall, are the risks worth it?
2. Once I root, how difficult is it to "unroot"? I'd like to be able to upgrade from the DX when my plan lets me and something better is out. Will rooting screw that for me?
3. What happens once I'm rooted? Does everything change to a blank screen? Do all my apps go "poof"? Will I suddenly find my self staring at a blank screen with endless possibilities but no idea where to begin?
Im feeling a bit overwhelmed...

Here's a good guide for you:
[GUIDE] Modifications: Risk vs. Reward
Before I first rooted my phone last Sept, I did a good month of playing with the stock settings and read every sticky I could find here...They're located in the Rescue Squad section, Help, and Hacks sections mostly...
Take it slow, there is a lot to take in. Learning the proper procedures is key to successful modifications to the X... But above all, have fun!

Relax, most everyone is concerned when they start messing with their device, keep in mind there are thousands who have gone through it and hundreds here willing and able to help. I don't know of anyone who's walked away from here with their phone not functioning if they are willing to invest the time.**
Answers
1. see MikeinRichmonds link above, reward is totally subjective, what may be "worth it" to me may not to you.
2. Easy to unroot, a few different ways, Both of z4root (froyo) and gingerbreak (gingerbread) have unroot buttons on the app, or you can do a full "SBF" restoring the phone to out-of-box condition, also very easy thanks to 1KDS SBF utility
3.Nothing really "happens" when your rooted, other than you now have relatively full control of the device you own. You can go as far as changing ROMs, or as light as "freezing" or uninstalling bloatware.

Honestly, there isn't much of a "risk" at all.
The chances of bricking are WAY less than some people make it sound.

mikeinrichmond is correct: take it slow, meaning read, read, read, including threads where people had problems.
people here will help you (believe it or not) even at night.

1. Yes the benefits far outway the risks in my opinion. As long as you take the time to read up on anything your not sure about
2. If all you do is root and freeze some bloat its fairly easy to unroot and go back to stock. But if you do like most of us with roming and theming its a slightly longer process but still easy enough to go back stock
3.no black screen it will be exactly the same. All your apps will still be there.
I say do it...if anything goes wrong just ask the forums and there will always be someone to answer your questions.

Lol! I would be scared as *bleep* to ever try and do that. Maybe with rollerblades I would be down... lol
@OP
If I were you I would first truly try and understand the reasons why you actually want to root. Rooting is the easy part. It's what you make of it. Here are some resources that you may find helpful.
