I will first post the link to the thread that discusses the Android OS.... Androidology (& Android OS Memory Management [task killers])

Secondly, there are a few "task killer" type apps you can check into...not sure that any of them will permanently stop the apps from starting...
SystemPanel - SystemPanelLite Task Manager v1.0.6 Application for Android | Tools
Task Killer - TasKiller Android App Review by AndroidTapp.com | Android Tapp. Android App Reviews
Advanced Task Killer - Advanced Task Killer Android App Review by AndroidTapp.com | Android Tapp. Android App Reviews

Is there any "downside" to rooting the phone? I am not terribly tech savy and would not like to mess something up that I cannot fix.

No downside - there are easy root methods now...however, feel comfortable in doing it...I would check out the "Hack" area and read, read, read...

    Thanks for any help
i have only had my phone for a week but was wondering where do you find what apps are running so you can stop them?

Phone settings (homescreen, hard menu key), applications, running services, tap on app and it will show a popup box asking if you want to force stop the process...or also - phone settings, applications, manage applications, select all or running (option accessed by your hard menu key in 2.1 I believe), open an app and you will see a force stop option..

    And welcome to the forums!!
