I'm very new to rooting/custom roms on the droid x and could use some help

I have 4.5.621 and 2.3.4 and i just did a root using the [How To] Root 2.3.4/4.5.621 with magic md5 (does not require Milestone SBF) - Android Forums magic md5 method apparently.

How would i now go about installing a custom rom, and which one should i use? I've only heard about liberty and miui. Could someone walk me through this? Again i'm very new to this and would love for my phone to run a little quicker and have better battery life.

Go with miui. Better battery and better interface just to get started. Gocto the gingerbread rom section and find the miui thread. The install instructions are at the top of the thread.

It's personal preference since everyone uses their phones differently battery life will vary. Try out a few and see which one fits you best. After looking at some ask any further questions you have, although instructions are usually in the first post of each thread.

Here's how to flash a ROM step by step from a freshly rooted phone.

Place the ROM zip on the root of the SD card (meaning not in any folders). Then:

    1. Install Droid 2 Bootstrap ($2 in the market but you've got to have it)
    2. Install ROM Manager Lite. (Free in the market)
    3. Open D2 Bootstrap. Hit Bootstrap Recovery. Close the app.
    4. Open ROM Manager. Select Install Latest Clockwork. Should be the top choice. When the device list pops up choose Droid X 2nd init.
    5. In ROM Manager choose Reboot Recovery. Phone will boot into Clockwork. Black screen with blue text.
    6. Once in Clockwork do a data wipe and cache wipe. Volume keys to navigate, Camera button to execute.
    7. Install ROM zip from SD card.
    8. Reboot

One thing: Once you've used Bootstrap, NEVER hit Bootstrap Recovery again or you'll be starting from scratch again.

K got the rom installed, thanks! What if i wanted to try another mod lets say, what would be different in the process. Do i just delete data/cache and install from the new zip (new rom) in clockworkmod?

    What rom did you install?

Always follow the op's ( original post by the developer) instructions concerning installing a different rom.

Sometimes you can do a cache/dalvic wipe and be fine. I seldom do so. I pretty much wipe data/cache/dalvik when installing or I install from a rooted sbf nandroid.

To install a different ROM, you'll first reboot to recovery. On 2nd init ROMs you want to press and hold Power til the Power Menu appears then select Reboot>Recovery. Or you can Reboot Recovery in ROM Manager anytime. Once in recovery repeat steps 6-8.

K, i got the hang of this now. clockworkmod is very easy to use. My issue is i've tried miui and wasn't happy with it. I then tried the cyanogen 9 mod but had no idea what version of google apps i needed to download to go along with the cyanogen version i downloaded. Mildly frustrating. Anyone have any other mods they use/recommend for speed/battery use where you can use google apps?

EDIT: nvm i figured it out. Any suggestions on apps or things i should get for a rooted phone?

As far as apps go, Adfree, Titanium Backup, Calls Blacklist, Wifi Tether for Root Users.
