Question Leaving USA for 3+ months, need advice.

My dad has recently developed health issues and lives down in Nicaragua. So, my tenative plan is that I am leaving USA to live in Nicaragua for July-September to help him with his situation. I was going to try to come back in October for work, but this could very possibly stretch into November-December depending on how things go.

I have a Droid X on Verizon Wireless and need to figure out what to do about keeping or canceling my service. As far as I can tell, these are my options:

    1) Keep Verizon / add some sort of Global plan to my existing plan / pay for current plan plus more $$$.
My issue with this is I don't believe Verizon supports the country of Nicaragua on my Droid X and that I would need to purchase a separate "enhanced VZ Wireless phone".

    2) Keep Verizon / turn off data, roaming, etc. / use WiFi with VoIP+GV / pay for current plan.
Using this technique, I would still pay my current monthly fee, but use WiFi and Google Voice to make calls etc.

    3) Cancel Verizon / use WiFi with VoIP+GV /
    pay ETF for canceling early.
Initially I was going to just cancel my Verizon plan, but it depends on how hefty the ETF is.

I wanted to just cancel my plan at first, but I am worried about the ETF as well as other complications. I also was curious if I cancelled my Verizon plan, can I still use my Droid X on a different carrier or at least for WiFi + VoIP??? I was under the impression that I can't use my Verizon Dx with another service because it's not your typical "SIM" card type setup. I am currently pretty confused on what to do and how to proceed.

Should I try and call Verizon up to see if they will wave the ETF because of medical emergency???

I would love to gain some knowledge so if anyone can give me some advice on what to do that would be awesome!

You could always suspend your service and maybe get a cheap phone for use while you are there. I have lots of family in Peru who are constantly on Facebook so jknow they have internet just not sure how "available" it might be. And they all have cell phones.

Sorry about your father hope things work out for you!

I have two lines on my current line with Verizon. If I suspend the service will it do it for both lines? I guess I should call Verizon, I was hoping to kind of avoid it as last resort.

You would have to suspend both lines, and I think the etf fee is 350, but depends on how close you are to your end of contract. Unfortunately I don't see them wsiving it, but it wouldn't hurt IMO to call and talk with a cs rep either.

Do Not Use your VZ phone

Having just gotten my bill after a trip to the Caribbean, my recommendation is bring a phone that takes a SIM card an use that.
I travel alot and you'd be better of getting a pre-paid account with Claro/Digicel or whoever is the provider there now.

I would suspend service or cancel the line. If you are close to the end of your contract the ETF won't be as bad. Just get a cheap phone when you get down there and use your X on wifi.

Thanks for the responses guys. Yeah I was going to probably pick up a Claro phone down there since that's what my dad is on. I'll give verizon a call and see what kind of damage is in store.
