ok so i got my phone and here are my specs....

    System Version: 4.5.605.MB810.Verizon.en.US

    Android Version: 2.3.3

Now my question is still the same, what should i do first? I found this, is it a good credible source, or do we have anything as extensive here? Noob's Guide to a Droid X - xda-developers

Awesome possum, its still on .605. Root will be easy. Don't activate it till you root it though that way you can block the OTA updates. If you need some info regarding root/etc I can get you some links when near my PC.

The guide you linked to is outdated. While it has a lot of useful info, it looks like it was written for Froyo, as it tells the user to use Droid X Bootstrap and z4root. A lot of the other stuff is useful, but Gingerbread changed some stuff.

    Here's a good how-to root here:
    [ROOT][HOW TO] Win/Linux/OS X [Latest DX .602/.605]

As far as if you want to flash ROMs, you just need to know this basic info:

When on stock, rooted, download the app Droid 2 Bootstrap. It will cost a couple $$ but its completely necessary. Choose Bootstrap Recovery, grant it Superuser, wait for Success message. Now download ROM Manager (free) choose to update CWM Recovery, then choose either Droid 2 or Droid X (2nd-init) (either will work on stock - most active development ROMs require the Droid X 2nd-init, so that one is generally more compatible across the board). Grant it Superuser, wait for Success message.

Now, find the ROM you want - general flashing instructions are:

Make backups of your apps if you already have a bunch installed/downloaded you want to keep. This is best done with Titanium Backup (paid) as it does batch backups/restores with data so you don't lose your stuff. Generally user apps are safe to restore cross-ROM, avoid system apps.

Make a backup of your contacts - sync to Google servers or export to SDCard.

Make a backup of your SMS if you care (there is market apps to do this just search for them)

Download the ROM.zip of your choice and gapps if necessary (it will state in the OP of the ROM thread what is needed)

    Put them on your SDCard.

    Boot into Recovery.

Make a nandroid (choose backup/restore and hit backup) - this will make an exact copy/image of your current setup in case something goes south you can restore to it.

    Wipe Data

    Wipe Cache

Install ROM.zip and any other necessary .zips as detailed in the OP of the ROM thread

    Reboot out.

    Sign into Google.

Sync contacts/download Titanium again, restore apps/data/sms as wanted.

    Done!

If you want to stay on stock rooted on .605 you need to freeze the OTA updater. You can either do it using the paid version of Titanium Backup, or by changing the extension using Root Explorer (this also costs money) either way works, I recommend both apps as indespensible. There is free apps that can do similar functions but none as easily and as well as those two.

Anyways, there's a video in the OP of the thread linked below that will show you how to freeze the updater using Root Explorer. If your using Titanium its even easier, just go in and find the apk listed and long-press and choose Freeze.

    Important Info for .621 Update!

Ok, so I got the SD Card... and I'm thinking about doing the root either tonight or tomorrow depending on how much time I have... What about ans SBF what do i need to do to get the right one? and should i get it before i root or no? and before i root should i do a back up or just manually take off the music, pictures, books, etc.? Also do i download the usb drivers and the script to my phone or to my computer? I assume the Computer, but i should probably be sure...

Noob Friendly Verizon Root and CM7 ROM Guide for Droid X .621 OTA Update

Look here. It's for .621 so DO NOT follow these instructions. There is some useful info on what to do BEFORE you SBF.
