Charging with a 24 volt cigarette lighter.

Will this hurt my phone or battery? Always been curious. I work in a Liehberr Crane which is shipped from Germany. Hence the 24v outlet. However our maintenance dept has to install power converters in the cranes to hook up the motorola radios. For a long time now I just rigged up my own car charger and wires and tapped into that to charge my phone but the other day I plugged it into the 24v outlet and it looked to be charging. I didn't leave it charging just in case. When it is on the charger in the crane it stays around 4 volts on my battery app whatever that means

Are you sure the lighter is 24 volts? I have a work truck that has a 24 volt system, but the lighter and other power ports are just 12 volts.

Yea i had a maintenance guy hook his meter up to it and it read 23.8

I can't answer your question directly but I can give you some information. Note, you do not want to mix voltages when it comes to batteries. That said, the charger has internals that convert the 12V down to a safe level for our batteries, my battery says 3.7V, so it probably sends 4-5 volts for charging purposes. I do not know if the internals are smart enough to convert 24V down but it should say somewhere, usually on the charger. If I had my car charger I'd look, but can't. For example, the wall charger that came with our phones can do 100-240V. I would guess you are probably ok, but I wouldn't risk my phone until I knew for sure.

So its probably best to buy a charger that says input 12-24v? I bought a replacement awhile ago, just not sure what the input would be.

Yup, assuming they are available. As long is it's certified USB the output should meet the USB standards which should be safe for our phones. I'd buy it from a legit manufacturer as well just to be extra safe.

no do not put the phone charger in a 24v outlet. your lucky you didnt fry it. your charger converts 12v to 5v you need a 24v to 5v charger. 5v is usb
