Android is open source, Google and the OHA apparently support third party development and tout android as the first, only, free and complete mobile platform. How can any argument be made that rooting and'or customizing it is in any way illegal, especially on a device that you OWN? Sure, it could void your warranty and maybe your providers TOS but illegal?
Violating someone's copyright, "stealing" paid Apps, etc....those things are secondary to rooting but not caused by rooting. trying to make rooting illegal certainly will not stop people from doing anything that they do now...thats just silly.

Im not against them (the manufacture) making it hard to brick your phone. I am against it hewing illegal. The issue is to develop exploits to root the phone, many times copy right protected files are reverse engineered which is illegal. Personally I rooted to dump the bloatware. You know that dell or hp would get their asses sued off if they blocked you from removing crap they install like norton, mcaffe and their crappy spyware filled games.
