Wireless Dock

Droid X running OTA Gingerbread release from Verizon, rooted, with bluetooth on.

When I place it on top of my laptop, also with bluetooth on, my phone goes into either car dock or multimedia dock mode. I haven't yet figured out if there is something specific that makes it go into 1 instead of the other, but I have been able to replicate this same behavior over and over.

Laptop is a Dell Latitude D630 running windows 7 32bit. Laptop is closed and connected to a dock with external keyboard, mouse, monitor, speakers, etc.

If I place the phone face up on the front edge of the laptop it goes into 1 of the 2 dock modes. Again bluetooth is turned on, on both devices. So I believe it has something to do with that. But if I remember right the bluetooth module is actually in the back left of this model laptop.
Mostly curious to see if anyone else has experienced this same behavior. I did search google but didn't find anything even close.

If anyone else has the same equipment, give it a try and see what happens.
Wonder if there could be a benefit to this.

A magnet in the laptop is activating the dock mode in the X. You can do the same thing with the magnet in a phone case. I have a Dell E6410 Latitude and can do the same thing.

I believe you are correct. I just find it odd that this happened for the first time today, during one of the rare times I had my bluetooth enabled. It appears that the bluetooth had absolutely nothing to do with it. I am still a bit curious why sometimes it loads car dock, and other times it loads multimedia dock.

It just depends on which end of the phone the magnet is near when you set it down. I'm guessing the magnet is one of the laptop speakers .

Either a speaker or most laptops have a magnet that activates a switch to tell when the lid is closed.
