It's what allows your weather, twitter, facebook, email apps to update even if you don't manually refresh. It'll do so when your phone is off or on. If you turn it off you'll save a little battery. However you'll need to turn it on when you use the market again. I suggest off unless you're really into your social apps.

Off? Why? We all have unlimited data...

I think you mean on. If you turn off your background data your stuff will not automatically refresh.

hello friends i need your help... I got the same question about the background data... i have a 150 MB data plan and i dont want to use it so i disable the data and the background data. then i tried to donwload some apps from the market but it asked me to enable the background data so i did. then I disable wifi and tried to download again(with the data disable) but i could do anything .... that means that when i donwload the first time when i used wifi i didnt used my data even though the background data was on and the data itself was off? please reply
