For Dummies like me - rooting, ROMs, and more
From the responses to a recent forum thread on "Comments on rooting" I can see that there are other folks on the forum who are at the same stage, with their Android devices, where I am. The forum thread and the site mentioned below helped me tremendously this morning. I hope they'll be as useful to someone else.
First - thanks to whomever updated the thread on this forum - "Dummies Guide to Android Terminology". It's much improved, much more helpful. However, I think it still could use a lot of clarification for the true newcomers ("Dummies") like me. [One example - "Boot Loader: State in which the droid can be flashed from RSD with an appropriate .sdk file that reprograms the phone into a specific ROM or update" - the newcomer can spend an unhappy 10-20 minutes trying to clarify "sdk", "flashed", "RSD" (<--never did get that one), in order to parse the meaning of this "definition". True, it's all there on the web, somewhere - but for the sake of the real newbie, is it so painful to put a few words in plain English???]
Second - the site "Andoid Police" site really does lay it all out in plain English for a Dummy like me: - tutorials on the advantages of, and reasons for, rooting - definition and discussions of terms - apps to consider when rooted - and a lot more. It explained volumes of things which have eluded me for the past few few months. Note: This site loads very slowly. Be patient; it's well worth the wait.

Rather suddenly this morning, lots of things about rooting and ROMs became clear to me. I hope others have the same happy experience.

Thanks for that Bill. It really can be confusing. Please feel free to edit your post to include the link to the android police page that helped you so much. Maybe in the near future we will have a comparable dictionary and explanation guide for everyone here.

You've only broken the surface on this one . Depending on what version of Android your running will dictate how you root it & what Rom's you can run .

Yes I saw that very early on. Unfortunately, I had already updated to Gingerbread. I think that now I have to "sbf"* back to Froyo before I can root. I'll do that eventually, but I may need a little handholding. People say it's dead simple to do, but the procedure in the tutorial is at least 12 steps long - and anything technological which is 12 steps long is not simple for me.
When the time comes, I'll post to the forum exactly what I'm hoping to accomplish by rooting, together with the phone model and version of Android, etc. Then I'll take one small step for mankind....

Thanks for the permission to post links. I added links to three tutorial which were very helpful to me.

Thanks Tidefan - I've saved the link, will come back to it when it's time to root. I have to admit, just from skimming through the list of procedures, this appears to be a long and involved process, with many places where an error could be made. But I trust the folks on this forum. If they say it's easy, then it must be easy - for them. I also realize that if I do get into trouble, the people here can bail me out. That's a lifesaver!

Sure can. You can always sbf. That's the nuclear option.
