Exclamation Help with GB root and custom roms

I am sorry for creating another noob thread. I have been on and off of droid x forums for a little bit now and it makes me want to finally do something with my phone. I was wondering what is the best. easiest,or safest way to root stock GB (system 4.5.602 android 2.3.3). Then after that what programs could i use to create a back up both for rom then apps and numbers. Then what custom roms would you recommend for me and how to install them ( i was interested in liberty). links are welcome.

Thank you for reading and/ or helping
    Zac

First off, you never have to be ashamed for asking a question, ask away, it's what we're all here for...to know!

Now, this was just released, give it a look through, there's a link inside to a root method for .602
    D3 Root Method on 602

As for apps after you root:

D2 Bootstrap Recovery - Makes nandroid backup (backup of the current state of your system) and allows you to flash custom zips without the need to be signed by Moto
Titanium Backup, My Backup Pro - Backs up just apps for easy restore/setup from one ROM to the next
Root Explorer - Allows you to modify system files

There are a lot of other good root apps, I usually just search "root" in the market and read the reviews.

Thank you for such a fast response!!! i am so glad to see such a helpful community I will look into those backups in the morning as it is late here. I will have to look up what a nanodroid is but thats why is asked for help i want to learn. I will read into the new method to root but i think i will end up waiting a week or two for both root methods to update as well as roms.

No problem, like I said, we're all glad to help.

Nandroid is a full backup of your system. So say you root, you make a nandroid of how you currently are set up (which would be stock, just rooted) then if you flashed a ROM you didn't like, you could just restore the nandroid backup you made and you're back to that exact setup you had when you made the backup.
