Wifi tether idiot?

So there's no way to root ota gb, right? Unfortunately, i bought a tablet with wifi only thinking oh, i'll just use my dx as a wifi hotspot...then i landed on that vzw page demanding an extra $20 to access and use a service that ought to be free...How do you go back to either froyo or one of the initial gb leaks? Once you've done that, I'm assuming you can use something like z4root to root and then use one of the tethering options like barnacle to connect a tablet?Any help or direction is greatly appreciated. There are so many different sources of very specific info that I'm having a hard time figuring out exactly where to start and what steps are involved...

First would be to sbf back to froyo...root and install 2 part Ginger zips, or cm7 based rom...first would be to sbf though..ill getvyou a link as soon as I get to a computer

The GB OTA is not rootable. SBF to froyo and stay there or if you want GB, root, D2 bootstrap, then the GB 2-part.

You need to sbf to froyo. If your main purpose is to get wifi then stay on froyo and get wifi tether. Much easier on froyo than gb to tether. Can't track you as easily from what I understand.

It means they can tell if you are tethering. The device sends a signal to the network notifying of that. AT&T is really cracking down on iphone users. Apparently they can even tell if a jailbroke user is tethering. They have said that when any such user is detected they are going to revoke their unlimited data plan, place them on tiered data, and charge them the fee for the tethering option, too. I have heard of Big Red moving in that direction as well. I guess it's only a matter of time before they figure it out. I read about it from engadget, they went as far as calling the tethering fee a "sham" just so they can charge you more.

Another thing: most if not all android tablets cannot access ad-hoc so make sure you are useing your tether program as infrastructure mode. I know wireless tether and wifi tether have this option but I don't think barnical does.

True, but sooner or later vzw will figure it out. It appears AT&T either has or is getting close.
