What is a ROM and "Rooting"? What are the benefits of doing this or having this?

Sorry. This maybe a basic question but being new to the Android platform has been challenging. Coming from the iPhone I was told that the learning curve might be steep but that it's nothing that a few QnA's and maybe days won't solve.


I have the Droid X (I received a defect ... mic doesn't work. Only speakerphone does) but am awaiting on my brand new defect-free phone by mid to end of August. All I've done so far is added LauncherPro, a few apps, few widgets, and a theme I have yet to install.

What more should I do and why so? I keep hearing of people changing out ROM and Rooting but not sure what it that is and what the benefits are.

Rooting is where we gain acces over the system files on the phone. Altho the X is "rootable", you do have to use good judgement and caution in what you do after you obtain root. It is not something to venture into as it is easy to cause you phone to malfunction in a way that is no longer works (this is called bricking and it becomes a very lovely paperweight - ask a few who have already done so)...ROM are not even a possibility on the X as this area of the phone remains locked (root did not gain access to it). Definitely venture over the Development Section of the forums and check out the "Hack" section (Droid X Hacks ). This is also a good link as it reviews android terminology... Is good to hear your replacement is on the way!! You will get to set it up all over again !!

You ask the benefits of rooting - that varies per individual...right now, it only gains you access to a few additional features. I rooted for the sole purpose of screenshots!! Everyone is different and if you don't want to do it right now, that is fine...if you are not sure you understand the system it is okay to wait as well...We do have an update coming - the effects of that on rooting are also uncertain so might be another reason to wait!!
